Hi Sam
Welcome to the thesis repository!
I have looked at your initial paper and can see that you have made a thoughtful start on this. You seem to already have interesting ideas and questions to ask, and this is backed up by some background work.
However, you will be aware that you are required to develop these initial thoughts into a more detailed research proposal of some 1500 words that present:
The background and rationale for the research (What’s it about, why do you think it is useful to do it)
Your Aims and Objectives (or Research Questions)
An indication of literature that relates to your research
An outline of the sources of information you will use to achieve your objectives/answer your questions, and some ideas on HOW you will collect that information
A plan of action to carry out the research
Once you have produced a proposal that I am satisfied gives a sound basis for the research – and in particular I will be looking for a proposal that is focussed and achievable within the time and resource available – I will approve it, and you can then, once you have satisfied the other requirements of your program, choose a date on which to start the dissertation proper. Remember that you have to complete your dissertation this within three months from your start date, to write it up within 15000 words – and MOST importantly, to be focussed – to find out a lot of information about a clearly defined area of work – NOT to find out a little bit about many wide-ranging things.
Of particular importance is the definition of clear aims and objectives/research questions. I'd encourage you to try to write in a sentence or two on exactly what you want to take away with you once you have finished your research your AIM. Then try to generate 4 or 5 specific research questions which if answered will enable you to achieve your aim.
This is important - I give great importance to getting aims/objectives and questions right (ie appropriate and achievable) right from the start, as from your aim, and particularly your questions, flow the reading you need to do and the information you need to gather.
To help you refine your proposal I am uploading to your Thesis Repository a paper that I have used for many years with International Masters Students. It is in the form of a worksheet… and I would encourage you to work through this (although you will clearly have done some thinking about some of the questions I pose) and work towards your Research Proposal which you should upload to the Thesis Repository – from whence I will respond.
Please feel free to ask me questions – email is fine for that if they are short, for more complex issues, such as when you start on your dissertation proper, drafts of sections, upload those to the thesis repository and I will respond via the repository, usually within 5 days. If you have any doubts about how to use the repository please seek advice from Student Care as soon as possible: I don’t have access to the student version of this, so am unable to advise on its use from your point of view.
Looking forward to seeing your draft proposal and to working with you over the months to come
John
