Introduction and Overview of Module 2

This module will look at knowledge development in general; scientific research as a way to develop knowledge; some historical examples; what research is; and the relationship between curiosity and research.

Objectives

  • Outline examples of medical research stemming from curiosity

  • Distinguish between curiosity-driven and impact-driven research

  • State how research affects the concept of curiosity

  • Describe how curiosity affects research

In this module, we need to understand a particular word ‘epistemology’. Epistemology is the branch of philosophy which deals with the origin, nature, methods, and limits of human knowledge (Butler, 2020). It is the origin of knowledge with which we are most concerned in this unit.

Have you ever thought about how knowledge in general is developed? There are various explanations of greater or lesser validity. Throughout history, expert opinion has been expounded and forms a kind of knowledge based on experience. For many years, the knowledge of nursing was based on expert opinion. In certain cultures, authorities, e.g. religious leaders, gave out proclamations that have traditionally been the base of their knowledge. Even proverbs, fables and folklore have added to our knowledge.

Throughout history, there have been well-known cases of knowledge development. For example, in ancient Greece, Euclid developed geometry and Archimedes developed the principle of buoyancy. Little knowledge development that we know of was done in the middle ages. It has been suggested that in some periods of history curiosity was not encouraged but epistemic restraint was (Manson, 2012). However, in the Renaissance, knowledge development was reborn and attention was paid to astronomy, philosophy, the Arts, and exploration of the world. In the 17th century, two specific examples are the development by Newton of the theory of gravity and the development by Harvey of the theory of circulation of blood.
