Question 1
This question uses information from the data file nhanes1.sav found on the StudyDesk (also see nhanes.txt for more details about the study and the variables measured).
Make sure the variable view in SPSS is setup correctly with all ‘labels’ correctly defined (with units), all ‘values’ assigned correctly for categorical variables and the correct ‘measure’ selected for all variables.
A researcher is interested if there is a relationship between the variables the “doctor told you to reduce fat/calories” (MCQ365D) and “am now reducing the fat in my diet” (MCQ370D). As a first look at the data, the researcher wishes to examine if there is an association between whether a doctor told a patient to reduce their fat/calories in their diet and whether or not they are reducing fat in their diet.

This question will examine the relationship between “doctor told you to reduce fat/calories” (MCQ365D) and “are you now reducing fat in diet” (MCQ370D) to see if there is a relationship between the two variables.
(a)  Use a contingency table to display the relationship between ‘doctor told you to reduce fat/calories’ and ‘now reducing fat in diet’ (you should use SPSS to complete this contingency table). The title of this table should reflect the context of the study and should include your NAME. (Note that by convention, a table title should appear above the table.)

(b) What proportion of patients who had a doctor tell them to reduce the fat in their diet, actually reduced the fat in their diet?

(c) What proportion of patients who reduced the fat in their diet, had a doctor tell them to reduce the fat in their diet?

(d) Does there appear to be an association between ‘doctor told you to reduce fat/calories’ and ‘now reducing fat in diet’? Explain in less than 100 words, using a numerical example(s) from a conditional distribution table to support your explanation.

Question 2
Consider the data in the file nhanes1.sav again. Use SPSS to find the answers to the following questions, but do not copy and paste SPSS output into your answer for parts (c) and (d)  .
(a)  Display the distribution of ‘money spent at the supermarket’ (CBD070) using an appropriate graph. Label the axes correctly, include units of measure and provide an appropriate title which includes your NAME.
