Assignment Task

The purpose of this essay assignment is to reflect on your school experience (K-12) in light of the various definitions, theories, and models of multiculturalism in Canada that we have been studying in this course.

  • To what extent and in what ways did your pre-university schooling aspire to and incorporate multiculturalism?
  • Was multiculturalism part of the curricular framework established by the bodies governing your school(s) that is, local school boards, regional authorities (like a Canadian province), or national governing bodies?  If so, in what ways was it present?
  • Did your teachers introduce multiculturalism into their classroom teaching? Or not?
  • Was multiculturalism evident in other ways in your life as a student say, in student organizations or heritage language programs or your daily encounters with other students?
  • Did this change over time?
  • As you look back, what were the challenges to multicultural education in your school(s)?
  • Were there opportunities that, upon reflection, you think your school(s) missed?
  • How to do it: First, it is essential that you consult the scholarly literature and policy guidelines that speak to the theme of multiculturalism and education.
  • A good place to start is the Multiculturalism Policy (MCP) Index that has been developed by researchers at Queen's University Links to an external site.

The Index monitors the evolution of multiculturalism in 21 western democracies. This includes an analysis of (and score for) multiculturalism in schools in each country, as well as a section on bilingual or mother tongue language instruction. (I will be referring to the Index extensively in class.) Refer to the three distinct “models” or “waves” of multiculturalism cultural pluralism, interculturalism, and robust multiculturalism. Do any of these “models” help to describe your school experience? You will find other references below that speak in different ways to the subject of multicultural education; you should consult these in addition to the regular course readings. For instance, perhaps (as is often the case) your local school board has established general guidelines or issued policy statements about this aspect of the curriculum.
