Objective
This assignment aims for you to understand, experience and critically appraise cultural and linguistic diversity in Australia, Sydney and/or Greater Western Sydney. Students will have a practical immersion in an experience of intercultural communication, using language skills and cultural knowledge acquired during the unit. The project involves both group and individual work.
Assessment details
This assignment involves a virtual field trip to experience Australian cultural and linguistic diversity. As part of a small group, you will experience a virtual site that represents cultural diversity and describe it and evaluate its significance. You are required to discuss the characteristics of the site you experience and critically appraise its significance and cultural value in the Australian context, using the Report Structure and rubric to guide you. Prior to your virtual visit, you need to learn a few expressions including greetings in the language relevant to the culture you are enquiring about to enhance the experience.
After forming a group, you will select from two possible categories of virtual field trips, then will plan your self-directed virtual field trip with your group during your online class. You will have the help of your tutor to help you prepare and carry out the tasks.
Watching and learning: visiting a virtual art gallery, cultural centre or museum.
Respecting: visiting a virtual mosque, church or sacred site.
The project comprises a written task as a research report of 1200 words. You will be given access to a library guide on report writing to download and use for your final submission. The first and second steps are done by a small group of between two and six students, but the third step, writing of the report, will be done individually.
Step One: (ungraded, satisfactory or unsatisfactory)
Group work (2-6 students)
In the period of Weeks 5 to 7, you will form a group of 2-6 students and discuss, decide on, and then submit a 300-400 word project plan explaining: (1) the name of the virtual site your group is going to “visit”, its location, its ethnic character and an explanation of the reason(s) why you chose this site or event; (2) write from a minimum of one up to a maximum of three research questions that you would like to investigate through the project. (3) prepare a list of words and expressions appropriate for your virtual field trip.
This project plan will be submitted in class and workshopped by your group and then checked by your tutor during the lectorial, being marked as satisfactory or unsatisfactory. Unsatisfactory project plans will need to be rewritten and resubmitted.
Step Two: (ungraded, satisfactory or unsatisfactory)
Group work
By the end of Week Eleven (11) you will visit the virtual site you nominated in Step One. Prepare your information in line with the library advice and rubric.
Feedback from other students and from your tutor may be discussed where relevant in your individual report.
Step Three: (30% of your final grade)

By Week 14 write up an individual project report, discussing your virtual field trip and reflecting upon the experience and then submit it through the Turnitin link. Detailed information and instructions on how to write this report will be provided during tutorials and on vUWS. The report should consist of a minimum of introduction, body, conclusion and references, incorporating all four of the following elements:
A discussion of the research question(s) you posited in Step One (you do not need to repeat the planning of the research questions, but rather focus on the results and findings relating to those research questions).
A description of which language expressions you considered would be appropriate for this site if you visited it in person.
The inclusion of two kinds of sources: primary and secondary (see Fleming text on vUWS in Supplementary Readings for more details).
A personal reflection on the experience of engaging in intercultural understanding.
Note: This is a minimum requirement. You may also include other optional elements, including a literature review, glossary, cross-cultural communication, results and other components listed in the Report Structure text available via vUWS.
