Design a product or service involving a virtual or augmented reality technology that reimagines a social interaction or experience of your choosing. It is something new, different, and not experienced yet.” – Werner Herzog Virtual realities (VR) and augmented realities (AR) are increasingly becoming a part of human life.

The ubiquity of personal computers, VR gaming consoles, smart phones, other smart devices and the internet is making these technologies more accessible and more widely used. The pandemic has highlighted how such tools could fundamentally change the nature of work and other events, becoming untethered from specific physical places and moving into a virtual realm. Reality altering technologies (VR, AR, holograms) have been explored extensively within science fiction media, with popular films such as Star Wars, The Matrix, and Blade Runner 2049 as well as the anthology series Black Mirror, exploring the hypothetical embodiment of such technologies. While there are identifiable sets of design-interaction and aesthetic tropes, there are many interesting ideas present within these fictional worlds that may point to the real world of our future.

This project aims to explore the potential future of virtual or augmented reality technologies and how they may impact the future of work, interaction or creativity. You are required to design a product or product-service system that incorporates VR and/or AR technology that changes the nature of a traditional experience. The choice of experience is open to you: this could be a music concert, artistic collaboration, work meeting, dating, exploring, exercising etc.

The main criteria are that it changes the nature of the experience as traditionally understood and opens up new modes of interaction and/or creativity. Your products or services should be mapped out carefully and you should consider what requirements the technology might need. Although the technology is rapidly developing, it is proposed that your designs can be “hypothetical” and may not necessarily be tied to technology that already exists today (although you should closely consider how current technology is developing to guide your thinking).

To accomplish this will require you to review VR and AR technologies, the surrounding culture and fictional representations, identify and explore a particular experience, undertake deep research for the target user(s) group/scenario, and develop and test human-centric designs that will change the nature of your chosen experience.

Requirements

• You should seek to innovate and push the boundaries of conventional thinking – consider the world of 2050 and how VR or AR technology will shape it.

• Your final design should incorporate both embodied physical devices (hardware, controllers, interactive tools etc.) and well as a virtual or augmented space and you should closely consider the link between these.

• Your final design should be closely aligned with human-centred design thinking and methods where the overarching experience of use is highly developed.
