Assessment Instructions:

This is a practical lab test assessment which may require you to research for additional guidance relevant to the topic.

  1. This assessment consists of two(2) tasks. All tasks must be completed.
  2. All work must be your own and all sentences must be well constructed with suitable grammar, punctuation and spelling and communicate your ideas clearly.
  3. Refer to your course outline for general assessment and other important regulations along with this assessment’s due date.
  4. The presentation of your work must use the appropriate tone, register, vocabulary (including non-sexist language), grammar and syntax.
  5. You will be assessed as ‘Achieved’ (A) or ‘not achieved’ (NA). If you are assessed as ‘NA’ for one or more elements, you may re-sit that (or those) elements.

Cheating and Plagiarism

It is not acceptable for a student to copy another student’s work or from the published material without quoting its source. That is, stating the author’s name, the title of publication, and publishing details.

Students work must be in their own words. Work that is similar in wording to another student or plagiarises published material will not be marked.

All students submitting similar work will be awarded “NA” grade in the course.

Some tasks may require collaboration with other students to be able to complete individual tasks. The collaboration will be limited to what is stated in the assignment instructions. All submitted work must be your own and must not disclose the details of your work to other students.

Graduate Profile Outcomes:
Apply advanced wireless and switching configuration and troubleshooting techniques to resolve to switch and routing issues for organisational networks.

Learning Outcomes

  • Configure VLANs, trunking, and link aggregation using appropriate protocols for Campus Networks.
  • Configure and troubleshoot network devices for a WLAN implementation using a variety of methods.
  • Implement switching and wireless configurations and troubleshooting to resolve to switch and routing issues for a Campus Network.

Case Study:

Abacus Institute of Studies (AIS) is an NZQA approved Category 1 Institution with a campus in Auckland and delivering Business, IT and English language qualifications. The campus has various departments with specific function as management, marketing and administration.

The campus structure was built having three accessible floors. The ground floor is where the management, administration, marketing and academic staff offices are located. The Business and IT departments are situated on the first floor while the English department, as well as the server room, are placed on the second floor.

The network is currently facing problems including slow speed, the uploading assignment takes time and some connectivity issues for the wireless users. With this, AIS decided to hire you as a new network engineer to plan and troubleshoot as well as re-design the current network if needed. And, the recommendation is to have a network that is comparatively faster, error-free and secure. The network needs to be Platform independent which can support the futuristic applications.

The current network design was handed over to you and you have found out the following concerns:
• All departments are within a single VLAN
• No trunking and security policies were configured within the switch network
• No redundant links were provided
• Wireless access is not secured enough.

With all the issues found, you are required to provide the solution so that the smooth working of the network is ensured with redundancy, security, high speed and a high degree of availability.

Task 1:

1. To meet the organisational requirements of the Abacus network, draw a topology diagram with the appropriate tool(s) that displays each of the following information:

  1. Design a topology diagram
  2. Network devices
  3. IP addressing scheme
  4. Link capacity
  5. Addition of a wireless router that is used as HOTSPOT for students only to get internet access.

2. For making the network efficient configure department switches as per the following requirements:

a. You are required to configure all switches of departments with 2960 switches.
b.Configure all switches comprising the below information.

  • Hostname (Floor Name)
  • Logon Banner
  • Console Password (Abacus)
  • Enable Password
  • Default Gateway

3. In order to configure VLANs propagation through the switching fabric for campus   network you should use VLAN Trunking Protocol (VTP) according to the settings below:
a. The VTP domain must be set to ABACUS
b. VTP Password: Password
c. Use VTP version 2
d. Server room switch must be the VTP server

4. To limit the broadcasts and let users use the media bandwidth efficiently, configure the appropriate VLANs to break up the broadcast domains.

5. You are required to access all the switches via server room for any configuration and troubleshooting remotely through SSH or Telnet.

6. To ensure efficient network management, you are required to configure the trunking protocols so that data may be shared efficiently among the departments and campuses.

7. In order to provide redundancy and ensure maximum availability, you are required to configure Link Aggregation between Core switch in a server room and other switches. All other switches are connected to the router through the switch in the server room. Briefly justify the protocols you used for the EtherChannel.

8. You are required to set up a WLAN access point to an internal network of IT department. Apply WPA or WPA2 enterprise security methods to secure wireless connectivity.

9. some IT department users are complaining that they are not able to connect to the wireless network. To troubleshoot, you are required to access the Wireless Router and provide a solution after investigating the problem.

10. For inter VLAN routing between the switches, you're required to implement router on a stick configuration.

11. To provide an extra layer of security, configure users with specific MAC address can connect to the wireless router. You found that some users can’t connect. You need to troubleshoot the issue accordingly.
