Task:
You are required to capture sound signals from a sensor (microphone), and to analyse the received
signals under different conditions in the time and frequency domains. The objective is to build
distance measuring device using received sound energy.
Part I - Experiment
• Generate different audio tones at different frequencies. These should be pure sine waves.
• Read the content of the files recorded on the computer and do the same after capturing the
sound played on one speaker from a distant microphone (few meters).
• Plot and compare the signals in the time and frequency domain.
• Capture sound at different distances from the speaker while recording the distance. Plot the
function of sound energy received vs the distance.
• Fit different curve functions to the (energy, distance) data and provide a suggested formula.
• Estimate the uncertainty in your measurements by taking several measurements at several
times/days and provide the probability distribution of the errors.
• By using different tones at different frequencies, recommend a certain frequency to be us ed
for distance measurement using captured sound energy.
