Highlights
This project will allow you to apply your knowledge of statistics to a research article. You will locate a physical therapy intervention research article that interests you and write a page paper covering the items listed below. The paper will be graded using the attached grading rubric.
1. Find a physical therapy intervention research article that interests you , It needs to be an RCT. You will need access to full text with all accompanying tables and figures. It is best to get it in pdf. Submit the citation and copy of the full text article to Dr Wrisley for approval by 1/24/2024 at 11:59pm. Only 1 student will be allowed to appraise each article, so it is beneficial to choose your article early.
2. Appraise the article using the form used in EBP I. (see attached)
3. Write a 2-5-page paper or provide a 4-7 minute recording in VIdgrid providing the following:
a) Analyze the statistics used in the paper.
b) How will the results of this research and the statistics utilized influence your practice? Make sure to refer to the statistics when you discuss how the intervention will influence your practice.
4. Turn in a copy of the article appraised, the appraisal forms and the paper or video (if submitting a video, also submit your PowerPoint Presentation) with your analysis on Canvas.
Clinical Question
Application of Evidence to Your Patient or Client choose one " Yes " " No" " Mixed Results" " Insufficient Detail".
1. Is the study’s purpose relevant to my clinical question?
2. Are there clinically meaningful differences between the subjects in the study and your patient or client?
3. Does your client meet the important inclusion and exclusion criteria of the study?
4. Is the final study sample similar enough to your patient to expect results similar to those of the study?
5. Can you perform the intervention of interest safely and appropriately in your clinical setting given your current knowledge and skill level and your current resources?
6. Does the intervention of interest fit within this patient of client’s expressed value and preferences?
7. Is the sampling procedure (recruitment strategy) likely to minimize bias?
8. Did the investigators randomly assign (or allocate) subjects to groups?
9. Was each subject’s group assignment concealed from the people enrolling individuals in the study?
10. Did the groups have similar sociodemographic, clinical, and prognostic characteristics at the start of the study?
11. Were subjects masked (or blinded) to their group assignment?
12. Were clinicians and/or outcome assessors masked (or blinded) to the subjects’ group assignment?
13. Did the investigators manage all of the groups in the same way except for the experimental interventions?
14. Did the investigators apply the study protocol and collect follow-up data on all subjects over a time frame long enough for the outcomes of interest to occur?
15. Are all participants who entered the study accounted for?
16. Did the subject attrition (e.g. withdrawal, loss to follow-up) occur over the course of the study?
17. If attrition occurred, did the investigators perform an intention-to-treat analysis?
18. Are study sources of funding and author conflicts identified?
19. Do you have enough confidence in the research validity (quality) of this paper to consider using this evidence with your patient or client?
20. Were outcome measures reliable and valid?
21. Were descriptive and inferential statistics applied to the results? (Provide what the authors found, not just the statistical tests)
22. Was there a treatment effect? If so, was it clinically relevant? (Provide the effect sizes and NNT if provided or calculated.)
21. Do the potential benefits outweigh the potential risks of using the intervention of interest with your patient or client?
22. Do you have enough confidence in the results of the study to use it with your patient?
23. Will you use the intervention of interest for this patient or client?
24. Did you answer your clinical question?
