Draw a Mandala - Arts & Humanities Assignment Help

I undertook an art-making experience for this assignment, using Lily Mixe’s short video on how to draw a mandala. I did my 90 minutes session on 17th August at 11am-12:30pm when it was quiet in my house and was not disturbed. I used A4 photocopy paper on my clean dinner table, I am not much of a visual artist, but I really wanted to try and do my best with what knowledge I had about Mandalas.
I will be using Graham Gibbs model of reflection; it tells me that Human beings learn and improve from experience but the process of improving from experience requires an element of Refection and introspection. Its not enough just to experience something to get better at it one naturally needs to consciously think about what was done and what can be done better to get better results. The Gibbs reflective model provides a tool to understand this process of learning from experience.

While I was making my mandala, I needed to make sure I had everything near me before I started, and I will show you photos of my progress along the way. I have never done a Mandala before, but I think I did a pretty good job.
As I have a look though images of different mandalas on the internet I start to wonder if I can draw something that looks as good as these photos. I started with getting a compass and drawing the circles different sizes, sometimes my compass would lift off the paper and I would have to start my circle on again until I could get it “perfect”.

I then got my different sized graphic pens, and this took me a couple of tries to draw on the line the same way I did with pencil so I waisted time taking my time with the outline. I then thought maybe I could try and put my pen into the compass and see how well that goes. I had the same problem as I did with the pencil it kept lifting off the page but I could not rub it out this time so some lines were not perfect, I was disappointed with how that turned out, but I could not worry about that now I needed to move along with my Mandala. I do find that this step went well only disappointed in trying to get all the circle to join properly.
At 30 minutes into drawing my mandala I started looking on the internet at different Mandalas so I could get some inspiration and find things I could draw myself that looks half decent.

It took me 15 to 20 minutes to find something that worked for my mandala, and I really liked the drawings I chose but after I drew them onto my mandala, I then chose different colours to help it stand out more. I was feeling confident while I was drawing my images in my mandala, but I did feel it was not as well done as if I was a professional artist. I have drawings of hearts but when I look at them, they do not really look like hearts. I feel it was a very positive situation for me especially when I started to add more colour, I love looking at bright colours in pictures so when I thought about drawing my mandala, I knew it had to be full of colours. Most of this went well for me but with the timing as well it made me rush it a little so if I took my time and did not worry about the time it would have been a lot neater. At this point I was really hoping on having more shapes in my mandala so even with me trying to get as much done as I could I still was behind what I was hoping on getting done by this point. When I make my analysis, I had a think about what things went well and what did not go so well, I think most things went well the things that did not go as well as expected was things were not coloured properly and the lines where not always straight.

This photo was taken at 75 minutes into drawing my Mandala and I had done more filling in and gave more colour to my art. This part was fun for me because I was able to add more colour and make it bright which is what I enjoy most about art. As I have mentioned before I did not do my drawing as neat as it should have been but with me getting anxious with how much time had already passed, I just wanted more of my Mandala completed before the time had finished. After I had finished this section of art, I was feeling a lot better about getting this done and looking pretty good for how good my art is. When I was in year 12, I was doing my art and my teacher was very happy with my work saying I can draw like a 5-year-old so when I look at my mandala, I can say to myself this is really great work I have done since I do not draw very good. The different patterns I was drawing turned out good and I was happy with my outcome. My alarm just went off at 90 minutes and I learnt that Mandalas are not easy to draw especially when you have never drawn one before, but I really had fun drawing my very first Mandala. The one way I could have made this more positive would have been if it was not timed, I could have taken my time and not been so worried nothing was going to get done. The skills I need to develop for me to have a better Mandala would be get into more art lessons and practice my lines and circles more plus also take my time not to rush would certainly help. I feel that my Mandala was well done for something I like to keep for myself but not something to sell. Next time I would not worry so much about completed it and just relax more then my art would look neater and more professional.

The things I have learnt from this is that it does not matter how good or bad I feel my mandala is, I know I had a great time over all drawing my very first one and it has lots of bright colours to resemble what I love when it comes to art. Everyone who does any kind of art is never wrong, art is what ever anyone makes of it.

To of made this a more positive situation I would have slowed down more but to tell everyone exactly how I am feeling I do not feel I have a bad experience I loved every part of this experience, it was my first mandala and what I drew is great for what I can do. If I wanted to do this better, I would have been more into art making and drawing but I could also get myself into art lessons.
