What

The incident relates to my first PEP where I was obliged to help a patient in ADLs and take his vital signs under the guidance of my facilitator. She explained how to take the patient's vital signs. But I was a little anxious because it was my first time obtaining vital signs from a Huntington disease patient. Before commencing the test, I introduced myself, explained to the patient about the test details which I was about to perform and took his consent. During that test, I managed to take all the vital sign data, but I did not get the correct blood pressure reading because the patient had Huntington’s disease and was having chorea.

So what

At the time of the incident, I felt anxious and afraid as I was performing the tests for the first time in my clinical practice (Badzek et al. 2013). I managed to take all the vital signs correctly except the blood pressure of the patient. But, I felt unprepared and thus was afraid to make any error during the test procedure. Due to my lack of knowledge about Huntington disease, my anxiety levels increased even more. My facilitator had told me to hold patient’s hand while taking the patient’s BP, however, due to fear and anxiety I forgot to hold the patient’s hand. This resulted in measuring wrong BP, and I had to repeat the test.

Now what

From the PEP, I learned about the Huntington disease and many other diseases and their effect on people. Now I’m confident to take vital signs, blood sugar level, wound management, ADLs, manual handling, operating full body hoist and standard lifter. I have learned from this PEP that I should know about patient’s history before assisting a patient. Moreover, I have learned that learning never stops in professional practice. Every new scenario adds to our professional knowledge and serves as a means of adding our skills and knowledge.

2. Write a short (1200 word) paper in which you reflect upon your experience and its influence on your future practice using Driscoll’s Model of Reflection as a framework. You should identify two key areas within your practice in which you can improve and strategies you can put in place to achieve positive outcomes in your next PEP.
