DROSOPHILA EXPERIMENT
Abstract:
This experiment aims to conduct the classic Me logel experiment on fruit flies, scientifically known as the Droso hila melanogaster. The main objective is to determine rk.4,4)-045 whether thr-twernmittihat-will-be-studied body color andthavtliginlacking-wings, are linked or not :This experimente involvitorking with live Drosophila flies and mastering the skills'of isolating, anesthetizing, counting, and differentiating the phenotypes and sex o f the C `flies/the chi-square test will be used to test the results and accept or reject the null hypothesis. All of the p-values obtained from conducting the chi-square test on the results show that the null hypothesis should be rejected. This significant difference between the expected and observed results bused to the lack of proficiency in counting and \distinguishing the flies with different phenotypes and sex. Using the F1 generation results, it was shown that the phenotypes of tan body color and having wings were dominant to the \phenotypes of black body color and lacking wings. It was also concluded that the genes that \ntrol these phenotypes are not linked and that the genes are found at different I • and are auttromal.
Introduction:
Drosophila melanogaster (Droso=fruit, phila=to like, melano=brown, gaster=belly), commonly known as the fruit fly, is a species that is used extensively in genetics. The reason why this fly makes for an excellent model organism is that it is cheap to grow and has a quick reproduction time. Also, the different phenotypes can be easily distinguished from each other. The Drosophila has 8 chromosomes with a haploid number of 4 where of them is the sex chromosome (X or Y). The Drosophila life cycle consist of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The duration that the Drosophila spends in each stage is listed below. These durations are at an incubation temperature of 25°C. • Egg: few hours • l Instar Larva: I day • 2nd Instar Larva: 2 days • 3rd Instar Larva: 3 days • Pupa Formation: 5 days • Adult Emerges: 9 days The life span of the adult Drosophila is around 2 months.
