To understand the application of building systems in modern buildings we need to understand the overall building.  This course will cover the purpose and function of buildings and how they are designed. We will start with residential buildings, since this is a subject that most people have some familiarity with.

Part 1 will cover the aspects of planning the building, including developing floor plans.  Students will work in Groups of 3 where possible.  We will be looking at three different styles of houses including:

• Single-family single storey with full basement
• Single-family two-storey, slab on grade
• Single family two storey with full basement

2. Describe the overall lifecycle of a building from planning and design to renovation and demolition.
3. Discuss climatic impacts on buildings and occupant requirements for the indoor environment.
4. Describe the process of sustainable building planning and design including Integrated Design and development of Owners Project Requirements.
5. Identify the factors involved in site selection and conceptual design.
6. Discuss basic structural requirements for buildings and the selection of materials and systems.
