Assignment Task: Mary is 68 and lives independently in a unit in suburbia which she owns. Mary has a 44-year-old daughter Caitlyn, who lives in a nearby suburb. Mary has a degenerative eye condition called Retinitis Pigmentosa. Her eye sight has progressively deteriorated throughout her life. Mary was classified as legally blind at 35, from which time she has used a long cane for mobility. She has always had an independent and active lifestyle. She retired at age 55, at which time most of her eyesight had diminished. Since then she has remained active volunteering and walking for leisure and fitness. Mary has experienced age related hearing loss which has progressively worsened in the last year. She is also starting to experience some difficulties associated with arthritis, especially in her knees and hands. As a result of this hearing loss and arthritis, Mary has been finding it more difficult to perform tasks like cooking and cleaning because she previously relied heavily on her hearing and fine motor skills to compensate for blindness. As such Mary worries about her ability to remain independent and living in her own home. Mary also says that she has lost confidence in social situations because she is often unable to hear and understand what people are saying. Four months ago when Mary was out volunteering she had a fall, breaking her wrist. After this setback she has not resumed her volunteer work and barely leaves the house. Caitlyn is very concern that her mother is almost completely socially isolated. Mary’s GP recently identified that Mary was experiencing depression and has created a mental health plan so that Mary can receive psychological services.
