 IT Assessment Task

In a bid to understand female bully-victims’ characteristics and attempt a general mobile-bullying solution, a two-phase, sequential mixed methods research will be conducted. There will be a preliminary statistical survey and then a follow-up with a subset of the respondents to get some inputs for the further development of the prototype app. The quantitative research phase will question the surrounding relationship between the individual respondent’s environment – immediate and extended, their exposure and habits with technology and their exhibition of mobile-bullying behaviors. The second phase will have some of these students, randomly selected, to test the mobile-bully app for usefulness in tackling mobile-bullying situations.

The first research question of this study is:

Research Question 1: What are the dynamics of female mobile bully-victim behavior in high Schools in South Africa?

Based on the above, the research goal is to understand the characteristics and dynamics of female mobile bully-victims in high schools in South Africa. This entails:

  • Examining the prevalence of female bully-victims – across grades, age groups (does the prevalence increase or decline with age and grade? At what age does bully-victim behavior peak?). This can help create knowledge about the area and time to focus interventions on.
  • Examining the areas of overlap between bully-victims and pure bullies, bully-victims and pure victims. This can help to determine whether bully-victims are a distinct group with its idiosyncrasies.
  • Examining which of bully-victim, bully or victim are most aggressive and the nature of their aggression. Which perpetration on the mobile platform they mostly engage in.
  • Eliciting other characteristics of bully-victims – friendship patterns, peer and social status, family background and whether parents control their behaviors, e.g., mobile phone usage, etc.

The second research question of this study is:

Research Question 2: How can a digital intervention help in addressing female mobile bully-victim behavior in high school students in South Africa?

From the above, the objective is to develop an anti-bullying mobile application as a technical intervention for the problem. This will entail:

  • Designing and developing a mobile app as an anti-bullying intervention for high school students in South Africa.
  • Designing features into the mobile app to help report cyberbullying in a school.
  • Designing the app with information features to support victims of bullying with what to do when in bullying situations
  • Designing the app with features through the use of the app for learning more about fighting bullying
