Dyslexia can affect children in decoding new words, which then causes difficulties in many learning areas such as reading, writing and spelling. Dyslexia is estimated to be as common as one in five kids having it (child mind institute, Katherine Martinelli). This research article that I have looked at in depth, will explain and explore why children with dyslexia struggle with their writing and therefore how to help them. The researchers conducted systematic searches for spelling strategies. Through the search, there was evidence that “effective remedial and compensatory intervention strategies in spelling, transcription, executive function, and working memory” (Lang Speech Hear Serv Sch. 2018 oct 24). It was found that some children receive help through sound spelling and also strategy development etc. It is extremely important for children with dyslexia to receive help with their struggles because it can be helped before progressed even further and for it to get worse for them. As an example, a child in a classroom may, especially, have difficulties with spelling. If a teacher doesn’t try to help with this and also interact with the child’s parent to ensure they are also getting help at home, then the child’s self-esteem will be likely to be very low and will begin to feel very degraded in a classroom which will reduce the chances of them interacting. It is important to listen to the child’s emotional feelings towards their dyslexia as well as their educational needs. Teachers should build a rapport with the children in the classroom and learn how the child may need help and how it will impact their learning, such as a quiet place to work or extra time on tests due to their reading and writing difficulties which will averagely take them longer than other students who do not have additional learning needs.
It is important that researchers find this information out about children with dyslexia, so that they can be helped in a classroom setting, at home and also in the everyday world. A teacher can make a classroom inclusive for a child with dyslexia, by putting them in a quiet space to work or be given extra time with work/exams like previously stated. By making a classroom inclusive children will feel as though their dyslexia is not a barrier to their working environment just an extra obstacle that can be overcame with the help of children’s teachers and parents.
