Throughout the module and the course of your studies, you will have started to appreciate that there are a myriad of training approaches which have been adopted by athletes and coaches with varying degrees of effectiveness. However, you will have also started to appreciate that there is an awful lot of material and information published both in the press and online from unfounded sources.

The aim of this assignment is for you to source a piece of mass-media material within the domain of training and critically evaluate its content using scientific rationale and knowledge.

You will take TWO key statements from the SAME article and critique them providing conclusions, recommendations and practical applications.

You will be tasked to produce an e-poster in a recognised scientific format and then defend your findings during a 5-minute live viva.

It is vitally important that your physiology centered e-poster & viva, and thus, the topic/theme/content of your assessment, relates to the material/content we have covered in this module and MUST fall within one of the below topics:

  • Endurance training & pacing

  • High intensity interval training

  • Training for strength and power

  • Training in the heat

  • Cooling strategies

  • Training at altitude

  • Other:

In order to be able to defend your approach you will need to have immersed yourself in the literature base and created a physiologically justified rationale for your choices. That means READING and citing peer-reviewed literature.

Questions during the 5-minute live viva will be centered around the PHYSIOLOGY associated with your topic, alongside questions related to the findings of your analysis, application and recommendations.

It is KEY that you understand the physiological responses, adaptations and mechanisms related to your topic and practice communicating this knowledge.
