Background/Overview

As a youth worker you begin to understand the organisation’s responsibilities when faced with young people in crisis. Sometimes they will be experiencing homelessness or will be at risk of becoming homeless.

This means using a crisis management response according to industry guidelines when working with young people at risk. You will need to understand and follow the organisation’s policies and procedures when assisting a young person in crisis. You will also need to know what your legal and ethical obligations as a youth worker are whilst working with children and/or adolescents.   

Throughout your career, you may be faced with challenging and sometimes upsetting situations that require you to follow established workplace guidelines regarding these legal and ethical frameworks, such as mandatory reporting.

Brief

For this assessment, you will be demonstrating your ability to understand how to respond to children and young people at risk and those facing critical incidents and/or homelessness. 

You will need to consider the needs of the client that appear in the scenario, which will provide you with a context to work within.

This assessment is split into three parts – Part A, Part B and Part C. 

Part A consists of filling in a risk assessment form regarding identifying and responding to young people at risk and short answer questions about responding to critical situations and identifying and responding to young people at risk (within stated word count + or – 10%).

Part B consists of short answer questions about identifying and responding to young people at risk (within stated word count + or – 10%).

Part C consists of short answer questions about working with and supporting people experiencing or at risk of homelessness (within stated word count + or – 10%).

Part A

This relates to legal and ethical issues that relate to your work environment at the youth centre. As it is with any new role, it is important to familiarise yourself with policies and procedures up front so you know what to do if a critical incident occurs.
