Humanities Assignment: Case Study:

Adam is a 14 year old boy who has lived in OOHC since he was 9 years old. Adam has been in 14 different placements before moving into your home 5 months ago. He is currently enrolled in school however rarely attends. Adams family arrived in Australia 6 years ago as refugees. Adam’s father David lives interstate and Adam’s mother Amelia, currently lives about an hour away using public transport. Adam reports having a close relationship with his mother, and often speaks to carers about missing her and wanting to see her. Amelia reports that she finds it hard to care for Adam for longer than a day or two, but sometimes much shorter. Adam reports that Amelia smokes marijuana regularly. Amelia has been unemployed for the time Adam has been in your home. Adam often absconds (runs away) from home to be with his mother. Sometimes Adam will leave for a couple of days before arriving at his mother’s house and reports staying with friends. Adam has been known to experiment with alcohol and other drugs (AOD) including marijuana and most recently has been chroming deodorant cans, which led to the assault of a carer on one particular occasion. Adam doesn’t have many meaningful relationships outside of his mother as he has no other family in the country. Adam enjoys hip hop music and has expressed wanting to be a rapper when he gets older. Questions: part1: 1. After asking Adam about the bruise, he agrees to tell you, only if you promise not to tell anyone. What would you say to Adam? What would you do? David has rung Adam to speak with him, and Adam has handed you the phone to talk with his father as Adam doesn’t want to speak with him right now.
