The Ascension of the Holy Prophet (PBUH); Gift of God for the Muslim Ummah
In the book “Early Islamic Mysticism: Sufi, Qur?an, Mi’raj, Poetic and Theological Writings'”, Sells explicates the sources of Islamic Mysticism where talks about messengers of God. She begins by providing an insight into Holy Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) Prophethood with respect to the mystical aspects which is later in the book, followed by the holy, spiritual, and religious orientation; his (PBUH) night journey. The tenth “He revealed in his servant what he revealed” and eighteenth “He had seen the signs of his lord, great signs” verse of Surah An-Najm (The Surah of the Star) piqued my interest the most. In the Quran, God has made it explicitly clear that there are signs in the events that took place on this night, and in the history of Islam in general, for those who reflect and for those of understanding (Salma). Alongside that, he (PBUH) was bestowed upon with a gift of God on this night which is one of the major highlights of this event. All these aspects of this night intrigued me and led me to explore the night journey of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), the signs that were revealed to him (PBUH) by God on this night along with the hidden message that was in these events for the people, and the gift that was presented to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) for the Muslim ummah.
 

THE NIGHT JOURNEY:
Holy Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) complete night journey is an event that holds significant importance in the Islamic history. It is worldwide known as Al-Isra' Wal-Mi'raj. The words Isra’ and Mi’raj refer to the two parts journey that the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Isra’ is when the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) travelled from a mosque in Mecca, which is known as Masjid al-Haram, to a mosque in Jerusalem, which is known as Masjid al-Aqsa. While Mi’raj is when he (PBUH) travelled from the Masjid al-Aqsa to heaven to meet with the great supreme being, the God Almighty, who is all powerful and all knowing.

Research Question:
Muslims offer prayer (salaat) five times daily during specific time frames throughout the day as it has been made obligatory by God. This helps them to keep alive the association and bond with God. My research question will be focusing on the event that took place in Islamic history through which the commandment of prayer was made obligatory for all the Muslims and the signs shown by God on that night.

Apart from that, I know that Salaat is one of the five pillars of Islam.

What I would like to learn more about is:

In Islamic history, the ascension of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is of great significance. This whole event is packed with the signs of God from start till the end. I would like to research more about what signs were shown to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and what was the reason behind showing those specific signs. I would like to connect the signs shown in the year 621 to the year 2020 to know what the message was behind each of those signs.
