Part 1

1. A statement of the research topic and why the practice/s is in need of improvement and exactly what the action research question will be. 

2. A synthesis of major themes in selected literature (5-6 journal articles, excluding Te Whāriki) that would inform your topic.

3. A brief discussion of the participants and the setting.

4. A clear description of the three data collection methods you would use and why.

5. Procedures you will follow (step by step in order).

6. How you would analyse the data you would collect from Data One (and later Data Two).

7. A possible intervention which might change the practice (drawn from the literature)

8. An assessment of the ethical issues you foresee in your project if you were to undertake it as you describe.

Part 2

1. Action research is driven by the identification of the teaching practice you are hoping to enhance with the intention to improve children’s outcomes. Action research starts with reflecting on what is not working or what could be improved. Your action research question should be focussed on making change rather than getting a ‘snapshot’ of what is happening.

2. Review at least 5-6 pieces of credible, current and relevant literature on your topic and synthesise the major themes; you can use sub-headings to help. For example, for a review on messy play you might organise the information into a) theoretical support b) enhanced outcomes c) cultural attitudes d) teaching strategies.

3. For discussion of participants and setting, clearly identify your intended participants and their numbers. Also include a description of both the physical layout and teaching philosophy of the setting (since it is likely these will influence the study). The discussion of three methods of data collection should be framed by the literature and their appropriateness to your study explained. Summarise the procedures demonstrating your understanding of the process of action research. Step one through to seven are explained in the course guide. Refer to the literature to inform your understanding of how you will analyse your data.

4. The intervention should be practice-based, dynamic and designed to have an immediate impact. In the assessment of the ethical issues include consideration of informed consent/participation, privacy and confidentiality and the child’s/participants rights; supported with literature.
