ECE 232 Creating Inclusive Environments Outdoor Play Space Report 20% (Individual)
Purpose Outdoor play spaces can offer children many opportunities to play and learn. The difference between 'natural' or 'wild' space and the 'built' play space is that the built play space is constructed and changed from its natural state. Planning inclusive play spaces outdoors can be a challenge if all diverse abilities of the child are not considered. As educators, it is our role to observe and critique these spaces in order to inform others of potential barriers to the child so that all adults can design and create, or adapt and modify outdoor spaces to facilitate and provide access for all children's play.

• Apply adaptations to promote access to all aspects of early learning curriculum indoors and outdoors.
• Apply adaptations and Universal Design for Learning principles to promote access to all aspects of early learning curriculum indoors and outdoors.
Assignment This assignment has two parts, both parts completed individually. Before you begin, look over the content in the assignment, so that when you are ready to visit a playground you know what to look for.
Begin by visiting a local playground/ play space (green space, arboretum, or park) in the community where you live or go to. Observe the space and any play that is happening, or you imagine happening. Then, reflect on the children with all abilities and variations of learning styles. Consider the sensory diet of each child, their movement, and how the playground does or does not support all children's play and learning experiences.
Take two (2) to four (4) photos of the playground/ play space with your phone or other device. Identify the name of the play space or area where you took pictures.
Part 1 — 10%
For each of the following questions, write your answers. Refer to your photos and course readings and content:
1. How can the children move in the playground/ play space? (consider all of the ways children move)
2. Look at the surface of the play areas, do they allow for children with assistive devices to move? (walkers, canes, strollers, wheelchairs, supported by an adult)
3. Does the playground look welcoming and accessible to all children and all abilities with different sensory diets? (consider all we discussed in class, the position to the street, noise, etc.)
4. Are there opportunities for children to encounter each other in dramatic or imaginative play?
5. Imagine yourself with children in the playground/ play space, is the space accessible to an adult who may be supporting a child?
