Assignment Task

Preparation for Design

Materials needed to design an outdoor play zone. Be thorough. Include specific details such as the number of items needed and include photographs of specific materials for clarity if needed. Each material will need to be clearly indicated in the diagrams that follow:

Indicate a minimum of 4 different activities the children could potentially engage in using these materials. List the curriculum area for each activity using the approved curriculum area list.

Intended Age Range of Children.

Rationale – why have you chosen the above materials, for this group of children at this time? Be thorough and specific – refer to course resources as well as the observation to support your rationale. Be sure to address the values of sustainability as they relate to the materials. 

Find an outdoor space in your community that you believe could be used to design this play zone. Insert photo of the physical area you will be using to design this play zone:

Environment: Explain how you will prepare the outdoor play zone for learning. Be specific in describing your educator intention in preparing this zone. Also consider options for storing the materials in the environment when they are not in use.

Documentation

Create a diagram of an outdoor play zone with the materials you intend to use. The diagram should clearly show how you would set up the play experiences for the children.  Include a minimum of 3 drawings to clearly show the play setting (technology can be used to draw the play setting). One of the drawings must situate your play zone within a larger play space.

Note: Please label all the materials within the diagram. The setup of those materials in your play zone should be clear in your drawing.

• Identify opportunities for children to take risk in this play zone.

• How does your outdoor play zone embody the values of sustainability? Discuss and refer to course resources. Consider the physical environment as well as the materials provided.
• What have you learned about planning and preparing for outdoor play through this assignment experience?
