Highlights
The early years Learning framework integrates leading early childhood views and theories, such as the Reggio Emilia Approach. One of the four EYLF principles and practices is that children are capable and competent. This is represented in the Reggio Emilia Idea of the Image of the child, in which children are considered as active and vital members of the larger community, as well as capable members of society.
A professional pedagogy throws light on the idea that kids are capable and competent and lays emphasis on learning and growth so that teachers can create a special and meaningful learning environment for each kid. Children who are empowered and thrive as a result have the capacity to meet learning objectives in several different circumstances.
Each youngster’s character and brain develop in a different way. As an early childhood teacher, I believe in promoting the development of social, emotional, intellectual, linguistic, and physical skills because all aspects of growth are equally important. The kids are offered childcare education and care that is grounded in the idea that all kids are capable and competent enough and that they should feel the same by providing them with the situations and environment where they learn more from their mistakes rather than us telling them what to do.
When kids go into early childhood settings, they are exposed to wider group of people and different setup which is different from what they have at home. I firmly believe that each child is independent and have their own ideas and their own way of expressing them. All we as an early childhood teacher must do is to give them the freedom to express their opinions instead of being a person who is always firm and in charge.
It is no joke that the period we are currently in is nothing more than a society full of overprotective parents that prevent their children from developing or learning new things out of concern that it would harm them in the long run. Sometimes parents fail to remember that mistakes are a normal part of learning and growing up for children.
For instance, I came across an incident at my friend’s place where his 5-year kid was playing with his so-called kitchen set and was preparing lunch for his parents. He was bored of using the toy knife and asked his dad for a knife from the kitchen. His dad gave him a blunt knife to play with but also explained him the safe way of using it and the danger that comes with it. It would have been a direct no to the same curious kid at my house. They are always excited and ready to explore and learn new things around them. The questions like, why can’t I use the knife that mom use? Why is the handle of the knife black in colour? shows how much observant and interested they are in learning and understanding things. The practical knowledge could only be gained through hands-on activities.
However, I also understand that safety is the utmost priority and that they cannot be let loose to do whatever they wish to. As an early childhood educator, we want to create an environment and atmosphere that intrigues but doesn’t overwhelm or over-stimulate.
Children engage with one another in a rich and healthy way. It is better for the child if it is allowed to develop unhindered by adults and without the excessive help that we occasionally provide. We don't want to safeguard anything that is already secure.
