Learning Possibilities

1. Children will explore their artistic language through mixing different colours, painting and creating their visual representation.

2. This play will enhance children’s communication skills by collaborating, sharing ideas and expressing their emotions and creativity through art.

3. Children will develop expressive language skills by recognising and describing colours, their textures, design and experiences.

Rationale

This invitation to play, will create environment for children where they can express themselves through art. The setup includes open ended art materials like large sheets of paper, acrylic colours, markers, pencil, canvas, brushes and a flower pot for some reference inviting children to express themselves through colour, texture and artistic exploration (Pelo, 2016). This encourages children’s language and communication development through creative art materials, aligning with Reggio Emilia approach’s emphasis on the “hundred languages of children” (Edwards et al., 2011). As children will engage and experiment with these materials, they will develop skills to describe colours, textures and their own creations, which will give them opportunity to express language skills (Pacini-Ketchabaw et al., 2016). By organising this collaborative setup, promoting communication and sharing of ideas, nurturing children’s artistic languages and expressions through open ended materials will lead to new discovery for them and self-directed play.

Storytelling Adventure: Embracing First Nations Perspectives

Plan

I will create a storytelling corner using different props and materials that will enhance children’s imaginative and creative storytelling while incorporating First Nations perspective. For creating a cosy corner, I will start with small tent made with lightweight materials using cloth fabric, adorned with Aboriginal artworks or style. Additionally, I will place a basked with storytelling prompts that represent First nations story books, culture, for example, placing cards showing Aboriginal dreamtime stories, their music or dance, or natural items like shields, leaves, feathers that hold Aboriginal cultural significance.

Further, to make it in a audio form, I will include recordings or traditional musical instruments that can accompany storytelling with authentic Aboriginal music or sounds for children to know better.

Learning possibilities

• Oral language development- Children will practice their expressive language skills, using vocabulary and enhance their ability of storytelling while exploring First nations perspective and culture.
• Cultural awareness- By including Aboriginal culture and awareness, children will gain exposure to Aboriginal and Torres Strait culture and appreciation for the traditions and diverse culture.
• Communication and social skills- Children will develop communication skills by storytelling and active listening to other’s stories, taking turns and responding to other children’s ideas with their culture with experiencing Aboriginal communication styles and storytelling techniques.

Rationale

This invitation to play will encourage oral language development by supporting children to engage in storytelling and creative imaginative play also incorporating First Nations perspective. Storytelling is a valuable context for children’s language, learning and development (Fellowes & Oakley, 2019). I will provide materials and resources like books, themes magazines and audio books which will serve as catalyst for children to explore language components like phonology, for example exploring this using First nations music and sounds, semantics, learning aboriginal vocabularies in relation to their culture and symbols, and pragmatic for sharing stories and cultural traditions. This invitation will promote cultural awareness and respect towards different cultures, allowing children to learn more about Aboriginal traditions and artistic language. This approach line up with the principle of respecting diversity and promoting equitable learning opportunities for all children while acknowledging the significance of First nations perspectives in early childhood educations. Furthermore, this environment and collaborative culture will foster communication and social skills which aligns with EYLF’s focus on learning outcome 4 stating that children becoming effective communicators through interactions.

Language Explorers

Plan

To execute this, I would set up a table with different materials that will represent diversified language and culture. I will include items such as world map, globe, dual language world card, indigenous artifacts, different cultural objects like musical instruments, picture books in different languages. Also, providing some writing and drawing materials such as pencil, paper and markers. I will set up an audio recorder as well for children to record what they are learning about different language.

Learning Possibilities

• Language awareness and development: Children will be able to explore multiple languages, scrips, sounds that will lead them to develop appreciation for linguistic diversity. They will be able to learn new vocabulary related to sounds, music and expanding their language skills.
• Expressive communication: Children would be able to use writing and drawing materials to express their ideas of different languages and culture, create their own stories, or representations. This will also promote non- verbal communication and self-expression of children.
• Cultural awareness: The presence of different culture artifacts, objects, sounds, music will lead to curiosity within children. After learning about them children will respect and understand the diversified culture.

Rationale

This invitation to play is organised to create an environment that will create linguistic and cultural diversity within children, which is important for EAL learners (Cabezas & Rouse, 2014). By showing children different materials and objects from various cultures and language will lead them to be aware and appreciate the richness of linguistic diversity (Cabezas & Rouse, 2014). The different elements will serve as representation of language, allowing children to explore and manipulate them while learning new language and descriptive words. The open-ended materials will encourage children to communicate their ideas and observations, which will foster language development through meaningful interactions (Flint & Adams, 2018). The inclusion of writing and drawing materials aligns with the principle of “hundred languages of children”, allowing children to express themselves through different modes of communication. I believe the recording of children will encourage oral language development and provide opportunities for EAL learners to practice speaking and storytelling (Cabezas & Rouse, 2014).
