ASSIGNMENT TASK:

DESCRIPTION:

As a stage 4 nursing student, we had to attend a tutorial which includes assessing and caringfor a patient with compromised airway. This subject was covered in week 2 and due to mylate enrolment issues, I was not able to attend the tutorial. However, I had the opportunity tocomplete this in consolidation week. A scenario is created by the tutors where a patient is notable to breathe and thus, we have to provide the necessary and optimum care to the patient. The tutor and other students were present during the process.

Evaluation:

Although upon reflection, my feelings were strong which could considered a bad aspect of thesituation, the good aspect was that I recognised them and their ability to influence my patient care.Accordingly, I tried to put my strong feelings to one side so that they did not influence my care for the patient. I made a pact with myself to explore them in greater detail following the shift when Ihad more time to devote to the task. As I continue to reflect on my practice as a nurse, I amdeveloping a greater awareness of its value, as highlighted by many nursing authors (Usher &Holmes, 2017).

Analysis:

While I assisted in dressing the wound, I tried to see the patient as a person requiring my assistance, not just focusing on the IVDU status. To assist in this attempt, I reminded myself of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) Code of Professional Conduct which requires nurses (as professionals) to: provide impartial (non-judgemental) care to support the health and wellbeing ofpeople requiring or receiving care and to practise nursing reflectively and ethically (NMBA, 2008a).Similarly, the NMBA Code of Ethics for Nurses in Australia requires nurses to value quality nursingcare for all people (NMBA, 2008b). I interacted professionally with the patient and my colleague, asking questions about the wound dressing products and procedure to enhance my own knowledgeand professional development. I was not familiar with the wound dressing, so made a note to learnmore about it by asking the Wound Care Nurse and by further research after my shift. Standard 3 ofthe NMBA Registered Nurse Standards for Practice requires nurses to maintain the capability forpractice, outlining the expectation that nurses will engage in lifelong learning throughout theircareers (NMBA, 2016). I am also aware that there is significant literature on the benefits of lifelonglearning, for nurses, the patients for whom they providecare and for the nursing profession as awhole (Davis, Taylor & Reyes, 2014).
