(01) Monochloroethane can be produced in a continuous reactor according to the reaction: 

C2H4 + HCI C2HSCI 

A fresh feed stream containing 47.5mo1913ethene, 47.5mo1% hydrogen chloride and 5.0mol% of inert CO2 is mixed with a recycle stream in a ratio of 4mol recycle/1mol fresh feed. The combined stream contains 19.9mol% CO2 and is fed to the reactor. The reactor effluent stream is fed to a condenser where all the monochloroethane is condensed to a pure liquid and sold as a product. The gas stream from the condenser contains the ethene, hydrogen chloride, and carbon dioxide. This stream is split into a purge stream, which leaves the process, and a recycle stream, which combines with fresh feed. Assume a basis of 100.Omol/h of fresh feed to the process.

(a) Determine the mole fraction of carbon dioxide in the purge stream (ns).  

(b) Perform a reaction balance (either extent of reaction balance or atomic balance) on the whole process to determine the composition and flow rate of the purge stream (ns) as well as the production rate of monochloroethane (n4).  

(c) Determine the overall conversion percentage of the process and single-pass conversion percentage of the reactor with respect to ethene.

(d) Briefly describe why it is desirable to have a recycle stream in this process.  (Bonus) Why might it be desirable to have a low single-pass conversion in the reactor? What issues may arise if the reactor is modified to increase the single-pass conversion?
