Assignment Task

Background

The 2021 Australian Early Development Census (AEDC) report indicates that nationally 22% of children are vulnerable on one or more domains with 11.4% of children being vulnerable on two or more domains. In NSW, these figures are 21.2% and 10.5% respectively. Children who are vulnerable or at-risk experience challenges that interfere with their capacity to cope with the school day and to maximise their learning potential.

The first five years of life, in particular, is a crucial period for later developmental and learning outcomes. Understanding factors that affect optimal development for children is important for the provision of ECEC experiences that best support the development of all children.

Task

1. You will be required to analyse the AEDC data for the two (2) Local Government Areas (LGAs) Canterbury and Leeton. Your report will focus on factors that may contribute to children's assessment as vulnerable or at risk in their first year of school. Your report will include the following sections/headings:

i. Introduction providing information about the AEDC, including explanation of key
terms.

Analysis of data: Presentation and analysis of Australian, NSW, Canterbury and Leeton community/LGA data for 2021. Required data is to be presented in a series of tables within an integrated analytic discussion (supported by relevant literature) comparing the data and including geographic, demographic and contextual information for Canterbury and Leeton to support your analysis.

You are required to provide Australian, NSW, Canterbury and Leeton community/LGA data for the five domains (Physical health & Wellbeing; Social competence; Emotional maturity; Language & cognitive skills; Communication & general knowledge). The following data will be required:

• Number & Percentage of children at risk for each domain
• Number & Percentage of vulnerable children for each domain
• Number & Percentage of children vulnerable on 1 domain or more domains
• Number & Percentage of children vulnerable on 2 or more domains Trends in the data from previous years - 2015 compared to 2018 and then compared to 2021.

ii. Local Community analysis: You will then select (from the list below) one local community / suburb within either the Canterbury LGA or Leeton LGA for deeper analysis.

• Wiley Park
• Leeton and surrounds

This section will include additional AEDC data for your selected local community/suburb. You will research this community in more depth to identify associated demographic and other factors that may influence children's developmental outcomes on school entry for children in this community, i.e. factors that may contribute to children being at-risk or vulnerable. The AEDC website will provide some of this information, but you will need to go beyond this to research your specific local community (Hint: local Council websites often provide demographic information as well as information about community resources and the ABS also provides relevant information). Your analysis will also refer to research (e.g. LSAC or other relevant research studies) to provide further support to explain how/why these factors are important and how they are associated with developmental outcomes.

In addition to the above required headings (indicated in bold), your report should also include a Conclusion. You may also use additional sub-headings if relevant/appropriate.

2. The aim of this task is to support you in the use of research evidence to inform practice decisions (i.e. evidence-based practice).

You will select one developmental domain (motor development or social development or emotional development or language development) and a specific age group (Infants aged 0- 24 months or toddlers aged 24-36 months or preschoolers aged 36-60 months) as the focus for this final assessment task.

Your response must clearly identify which of the above domains you are focussing on, identify the focus age group and address the following:

(i) With reference to relevant scholarly sources (refer to marking criteria 1), provide an overview of the key developmental outcomes/skills relevant for your chosen age group and developmental domain.
