The brief

Ecliptic Events International (EEI) is an international (fictional) event company based in Leeds, specialising in organising and producing outside music and theatre productions. EEI has been operating for 9 years. Originally EEI was a small family business but the company has expanded rapidly, and now organises approximately 25 events per year. This includes ten events in Europe and the USA but they do not have an office or any permanent staff abroad. EEI’s staffing consists of:

• CEO (Chief Executive Officer)
• 10 full-time permanent members of staff
• 8 part-time permanent members of staff
• Up to 50 members of staff on short-term, temporary contracts to cover specific events

• A pool of 30 casual staff on zero-hour contracts (based in the UK)
• Up to 100 volunteers (based locally and abroad where the events are held)

EEI has had no formal HR strategy and the management of staff has been done on an ad hoc basis. This worked well whilst the company remained small, but as the size of the company has grown and the number of staff has expanded, problems have arisen. EEI is currently experiencing the following staffing problems:

• Low morale amongst permanent employees who feel over-worked, under-valued and perceived diversity and gender barriers;
• Difficulties recruiting sufficient numbers of temporary staff with the required skills and experience;
• Obstacles to integrating staff from diverse backgrounds into the company’s culture;
• Problems of motivation and retention of volunteers.

EEI has commissioned you to produce a report based on academic evidence and current research that will recommend an HRM strategy/approach that will help them address these issues as an event company.

The business report

The following areas should be covered within your report:

• Building on your first assessment, highlighting the advantages and disadvantages of developing and investing in an HRM strategy for companies such as EEI;
• A critique and evaluation of the relevance of different models of HRM (e.g. soft/hard/high commitment/flexible firm/empowerment etc.) for addressing the problems EEI are experiencing;
• An analysis of how the specific issues related to the different types of employee (permanent/temporary/casual/volunteer etc.) would be tackled via the HRM approach you are recommending;
• An exploration of how the wider social and business context will impact on the HRM the strategy you are recommending for EEI (e.g. questions of diversity and equal opportunity; the current labour market in terms of availability of skilled workers and willingness of people to take casual, temporary or volunteer positions; ethical issues related to HRM etc.)
