Highlights
Overview
This is a skills exercise. Writing business reports, and using formal business and academic language, will be a vital part of your workplace. Thus, the purpose of this exercise is to add to your skill set, rather than simply to accumulate marks. By writing it in your own words, and making sure of the basics, such as the citation of sources and a list of references, you will begin building a case for a passing grade. Completing this task will develop your critical thinking and communication skills. Your task is to choose one of the four topics below. You will then write a Report that addresses each question or part of that topic. It is expected that your Report will reference the scholarly literature. See the notes at the end of the topic section for further information.
Report Questions
1. In the first module of lectures, we noted the countries identified by the World Bank as recent success stories in economic development. Consider the following countries taken from that list:
Botswana Brazil Indonesia Malta Oman Thailand
Consider the following questions about your country of choice (to give reasonable coverage of the topic, countries will be chosen on a first-come first-served basis. Don’t
worry, each one in its own way is interesting, and will be a good basis for a Presentation and Report).
a) Look at the key indicators which might justify a judgement that this country has been a success story of development. To what extent does the data provide a prima facie case that successful development has occurred?
b) The label ‘development success story’ implies that the country had originally been languishing in underdevelopment. If this is the case, what constraint or constraints, if any were operating to prevent development? What factors, according to the literature, acted to overcome this constraint?
c) It is sometimes argued that developing countries essentially face three core choices of strategy to achieve development, these being EOI, ISI, or a more purely free market approach. To what extent does the country’s path fit within this way of understanding late development?
d) Based on your answers to the questions above, what is your final judgement as to whether the country can be considered a case of successful late development? To what extent could this country’s experience be emulated or provide lessons for other LDCs attempting late development? Be prepared to be sceptical on both of these questions note of special circumstances, and make note of any special or unique circumstances that may have assisted its economic growth.

2. One of the most promising pathways to development was the rise of microfinancing for individuals and households facing extreme poverty in developing countries.
a) Provide a brief history of the rise of microfinancing, and summarise its core characteristics especially as it was originally envisaged.
b) Identify a particular country in which microfinancing has been a prominent feature. Discuss its origins in the country, its particular characteristics there, and the degree to which it could be considered a success.
c) Microfinancing has been argued to have been particularly empowering for women in poor communities. Why was this particularly the case, and to what extent has the rise of micro financing institutions been particularly successful in this regard?
