This task is designed to enable pre-service teachers to demonstrate a broad knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, histories and languages, as well as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives and pedagogy.
Pre-service teachers will develop an integrated unit of work. They will select an appropriate theme for their unit plan, and research content, knowledge/s, pedagogies, skills and curriculum links to inform the activities that they plan to teach and assess. Pre-service teachers will also consider the education of students from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds.
Pre-service teachers will explore themes respectfully and in keeping with appropriate protocols. This includes engaging with parents, carers, elders, support workers and communities.
Pre-service teachers are encouraged to work collaboratively for this assessment task, however pre-service teachers may choose to work either individually, collaboratively in pairs, or in a group of three to design an integrated unit plan with a theme based on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education.
• Working individually - it is expected that the integrated unit plan will be of 3 weeks duration, with at least 3 lessons (or equivalent) per week
• Working in pairs – it is expected that the integrated unit plan will be of 5 weeks duration, with at least 3 lessons (or equivalent) per week
• Working in a group of three – it is expected that the integrated unit plan will be of 8 weeks duration, with at least 3 lessons (or equivalent) per week
The unit plan will include at least one activity that allows students to learn through experience/s, such as an excursion or incursion, cultural workshop or engagement with community.
The theme or topic for the unit plan should be di?erent to the focus for Assessment Task 1. Students will need to demonstrate the application of cultural protocols, links to relevant curriculum disciplines, planned assessment tasks, and a schedule for the unit.
The assessment criteria for this task includes:
• Demonstrate the capacity to plan an integrated unit, for a level of your choice, that consequently demonstrates knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, histories and/or languages.
• Demonstrate the ability to include Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives and knowledges, protocols, and promotion of reconciliation by strengthening shared understandings of cultures and histories.
• Demonstrate the capacity to include multiple pedagogical approaches to teaching and learning in the planning of the integrated unit (e.g. 8 Ways of Learning and the 3Rs)
• Ability to use curriculum mapping, develop appropriate assessment tasks, and integrate hands-on activities to class-based learning throughout the unit.
Written feedback aligned to the criteria will be provided through Moodle.
