Eddie Mambo, who campaigned for Aboriginal Health Service, Education and Indigenous Land Rights was born 29 June 1936 on the island of Mer (commonly known as Murray Island), Eddie Mambo was an activist from 1967 in the Referendum campaign and assisted with funding the Townsville Aboriginal and Islander Health Service, In 1973 Eddie became a co-founder and director of the Townsville “Black Community School”. In 1975 Eddie was asked to join the National Aboriginal Education Committee which he served for 3 years. In 1981 Eddie gave his first speech about traditional land ownership, on the 20th of May in 1982 Eddie and fellow Mer Islanders began their legal claim for ownership of their lands, they won their rights on the 3rd of June in 1992.

Eddie Mambo was an activist from 1967 in the Referendum campaign and assisted with funding the Townsville Aboriginal and Islander Health Service, the issue of land rights became his main focus in 1974 after finding out His traditional land was owned by the government. In 1973 Eddie became a co-founder and director of the Townsville “Black Community School” which was one of the first in Australia, starting off with 10 students by the late 1970’s 45 students had enrolled in the school. In 1975 Eddie was asked to join the National Aboriginal Education Committee which he served for 3 years. In 1981 Eddie gave his first speech about traditional land ownership and inheritance system that his community followed on Mer Island. A lawyer in the audience encouraged Eddie to claim land rights through the court system. On the 20th of May in 1982 Eddie and fellow Mer Islanders began their legal claim for ownership of their lands, they won their rights on the 3rd of June in 1992. The Mambo decision resulted in four main objectives – to provide for the recognition and protection of native title, to establish ways in which future dealings affecting native title may proceed and set standards for those dealings, to establish a mechanism for determining claims to native title, to provide for or permit the validation of past acts and intermediate period acts, invalidated because of the existence of native title. Eddie’s achievements benefitted his peoples as they can practice their own health remedies on their native lands.

I as a Registered nurse can provide culturally safe care to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples by asking them of any cultural preferences they have before commencing their care so I am able to incorporate their needs into modern medicine, whilst respecting their native and culturally safe remedies.
