NOTE: Assignment 2 is a COMPULSORY component (see below) of this unit. This means that you MUST PASS Assignment 2 (total of 2a and 2b) to pass the unit.
**Compulsory pass: If you achieve an overall mark for the unit of 50% or more, but you do not achieve 50% for Assignment 2, you will receive the grade of NC: fail compulsory component, and you will be required to repeat this unit of study.

Overview: 
In this assignment, students are asked to record detailed observations of the relationships between a young child and a parent and a caregiver. Students are required to interpret the observations with the theories learned in this unit, and provide strategies to support ongoing positive relationship between child/parent and child/educator. Factors that influence relationships also need to be discussed.

Task 1 and 2
Task 1: to be completed BEFORE you begin your placement Read the ECA Code of Ethics  Make sure that your behaviour follows the required ethical standards as laid out in this document

Task 2: when you are on placement - Obtain relevant informed consent
** I urge you to go through every point below carefully. This task addresses criterion 5 for this assignment. Make sure you complete the tasks below to pass this criterion.

-Discuss your assignment with the Centre director/Co-ordinator. Show your Information Letters, Consent Forms and make sure that these meet the Centre requirements for ethical behaviour. If you need to make any amendments please do so and list the changes you made on Ethics Statement before you submit it.
-Identify your target child (must be a child under 2 years of age i.e. under 24 months) and obtain relevant permissions. You MUST use the relevant Information Forms and Consent Forms (available in the assessment tile) for parent/guardian permission and educator permission. Parents/educators keep the Information Form. You must keep the Consent Forms in a locked drawer/filing cabinet (ie somewhere no-one else can get to them).

Task 3 and 4
Task 3: Introduce target child, parent and educator
-Introduction of the child – include details such as name [pseudonym], age, gender, ethnicity, family background, duration and extent of non-parental care and any other
relevant information
-Introduction of the parent – include details such as partner [if any, with pseudonyms], employment, other children, and any other relevant family information

Task 4: Observe and interpret
1. Observe:

Aim: Your observations aim at finding out the relationship between the child and parent/guardian and the educator.  The observation question: What is the relationship between the [child’s name] and [parent/guardian name/educator name]?
What: You must observe and record (in anecdotal format). Each interaction must be of about 5 minutes duration.
