Aim and Invitation
The aim of the second assignment of this unit is to provide an opportunity for students to research online counselling (video) and put this research into practice. You are invited to engage in online counselling (video) on a topic, usually experienced in everyday life, such as those listed below in Table 1. You will have one counselling session. The transcript will be seen only by the student counsellor and will be securely stored and deleted by the student at the end of semester. If your problem is of sufficient concern and has not been resolved, your student-counsellor will refer you to a registered counsellor.
Student Preparation, Your Care and Confidentiality
Sometimes dealing with problems in counselling leads to feeling uncomfortable or distressed. This may be due to several causes, such as unfinished issues, forgotten memories, or realizing through counselling that the issue is more serious than initially thought. In these instances, your care is of the utmost importance and it may be necessary for your counsellor to consult with me, Nicky Jacobs, or other specialists associated within the university to see that you receive the best care possible to assist you to deal with the issue. If additional assistance is required, your student-counsellor will be expected to maintain confidentiality and discuss this with you.
Maintaining confidentiality is important. Your counsellor must maintain your confidentiality and deal with your issue respectfully. It is necessary for the student-counsellor to write about and reflect on what happens in the session with you. A pseudonym will be used to protect your identity. However, the student-counsellor may break confidentiality if you reveal something which suggests you are at immediate and significant risk of harm. If this circumstance arises, the student-counsellor will make every effort to contact you first before releasing your information and will only release information necessary to keep you safe.
