Assignment Task

1 Media In Education Is Important

Historically, teaching and learning has been applied traditionally using the teacher-centred approach, which relies on the teacher’s ability to impart knowledge to the learners by using his/her skills. However, education in the 21st century requires teaching and learning to be relevant to the lives of the learners and developing them to think critically. “The problem is they (teachers) are trying to meet the future by doing what they did in the past, and on the way, they are alienating millions of kids who don’t see any purpose in going to school” (Sir Ken Ribonson). The first-year module “Using Media in Teaching (EDM11ES/EF)” has provided you with enough information based on the two units you’ve already covered. Make use of such information to assertively compile an aesthetic magazine of your specialization for your readers (learners) as well as incorporating other types of media you’ve learned about thus far to teach.

Question

In your respective groups, conduct meticulous research on the importance of using media in teaching to support the statements made above. Your research should be very profound, that it identifies the important aspects of media and education in collaboration with the content of your subjects (specialization) you’ll be teaching at schools during your Teaching Practice (TP). Focus on elaborating on the following:

  • Sir Ken Ribonson’s statement.
  • Engaging learners.
  • Effective learning strategies.
  • Bridge the gap between learners’ knowledge and the learning objective.

2.Topic Of Your Choice

Popular print media covers a wide variety of topics, and generally they do so in a lively and accessible manner. Journalists also tend to write about the impact on society of things which might be dealt with in an abstract way in learning areas of different studies. If you were to teach your learners at school, using any topic of your choice from one module of your specialization, how will you ensure that your lesson utilizes the following key concepts of popular print media (magazine) to:

Choose and mention the grade you’ll be teaching.

  • Give reasons why you this grade

Activate learner interest in the topic you intend to teach?

  • Insert an image reciting this action

Contextualize learning by linking the topic to the learners’ life experiences.

  • Insert an image reciting this action

Making abstract concepts more visible and concrete to improve their understanding of the topic.

  • Insert an image reciting this action

How will the learning objectives of this topic have an impact on society?

  • Insert an image reciting this action

3. Board Game

Simulations are teaching activities in which learners are placed in an artificial situation that intentionally imitates real-life situation. Board games are an ideal form of simulation to use in large classes. They allow for individual and small group work and keep learners in their desks. Choose a different topic of your specialization and design any traditional board game of your choice, e.g. “Snakes and Ladders”; “Sudoku”; “Monopoly” to inform the readers (learners) of your magazine about the importance of the content in that topic.

  • Those choose the “Snakes and Ladders” board game should include the following:
  • Up to 50 spots with “Start” on spot number 1 – and “Finish” on spot number 50.
  • Information about the topic of your choice, which teaches your learners the content.
  • This information needs to be on some of the spots on your board game.
  • Visible snakes and ladders, (e.g advantages & disadvantage; strengths & weaknesses).
  • Rules of your board game; tools to be used; how many candidates are allowed to play.
  • For visible text, place you board game on Landscape (horizontal) layout, not Portrait
