Assignment Task

Introduction

In this course, we will work alongside you to build a range of research skills and understandings. In Assessment 1, you will be given the opportunity to complete a task that demonstrates your emerging skill with regard to critiquing educational research. One essential skill for scholars is to critique educational research articles. Without this competence, it can be difficult (a) to draw fair, accurate conclusions based on others’ research; and, (b) to effectively plan, prepare, and conduct one’s own research.

Section 1

Part A: First you will focus on each of the four research articles in isolation. For each of the research articles, you will need to (1) Identify the research problem/issue, purpose, and questions, and (2) Describe the research methodology (or methodologies) that have underpinned the research (NB: These may not be explicit or discrete).

Part B: Next please comment on the ontological and epistemological assumptions that underpin each discrete piece of research. For instance, you might consider the framing of the problem or issue, its paradigmatic location, the orientation of question(s) being asked and answer(s) sought, the associated choice of methods used, the approach to data analysis, and what this implies about ‘knowledge’ (epistemology) or ‘truth’ (ontology). Ensure that your discussion refers to and incorporates your understanding of course content (e.g., lecture notes, readings). A few targeted references that make effective use of the course content should suffice.

Section 2

In the second section, we will extend our work in the first section by examining these four articles in relation to one another. Here, you will need to compare and contrast these articles and explain how and why you believe they are similar to and differ from one another. Focus on at least three features for this section (e.g., research problems/issues, paradigmatic location, epistemological/ontological assumptions, etc). Include all four articles in your analysis.
