Assignment Task

Discuss how psychological or gender theories have been used to explain the abilities and challenges of individuals with ASD and their implications for teaching and student learning. You are required to focus your discussion on ONE of the following theories:

• Theory of Mind, OR
• Weak central coherence, OR
• Executive functioning
• Gender Theory - Female Autism

In this assignment, you are expected to:

1. Explain the psychological or gender theory you have chosen from above and the specific components attributed to understanding the cognitive processing functions and associated behavioural impacts for individuals with ASD.

2. Analyse the strengths and weaknesses of your chosen theory, and then.

3. Evaluate how your chosen psychological theory informs your understanding of students' learning profiles with ASD.

Your assignment MUST address each of the main criteria as follows (see the marking rubric below for further information):

1. Theoretical Explanations : Describe and explain the main concepts and assumptions related to your chosen psychological theory or gender theory,

2. Analysis of Theoretical Perspective: Analyse the strengths and weaknesses of the theory for explaining and understanding the cognitive processing styles and behavioural impacts associated with students with ASD,

3. Educational Planning : Describe and evaluate the effects/impact of your chosen theory and its related evidence, upon the learning profile and educational needs of students with ASD,

4. Research Evidence : Utilise recent research findings in the literature to support your definitions, explanations, arguments and examples in practice, throughout your essay.

Overall, it is hoped that when you complete this assignment, you will have gained a deeper understanding of the learning style of students with ASD and its psychological background.
