Highlights
There are two parts to the assignment, and you must answer both parts.
PART A: Rationale
In Part A, you will explain the rationale of the design of your unit of work of English content. You should include the following sections:
1. It should be 500 words long (+/- 10%). Your marker will not mark beyond 550 words. A word count must be included.
2. You should start with a short paragraph on introducing the target school – Happy Public School. Focus on the student demographics and NAPLAN performance (Year 5).
3. After the school information, introduce your design rationale. 4. This is a research-informed essay. You need to use at least THREE academic readings to support and justify your design. You must base your justification on your chosen text and your design.
5. The reference list is not included in your word count. All cited academic and curriculum / syllabus materials must be referenced using APA (7th ed.).
You should cite at least THREE academic readings, and these are referenced in a separate list.
• The reference list should be written in APA-style (the references will not count towards the word limit).
• None of the prescribed academic articles introduced in lectures or tutorials may be counted towards your FIVE academic readings. You can cite them but they are not counted.
• Academic readings must be sourced from reputable academic journals and publishers (do not trust the first Google result), and should be relevant to English teaching and learning with primary school students. General readings on educational psychology, neurology/medical sciences, psychology, sociology, urban planning…etc. should only be used as supplementary information, and these articles will not count towards your FIVE academic readings.
• Doctoral and Master dissertations do not count towards your FIVE academic readings.
• Media publications (e.g. newspaper, magazine) and social media publications (e.g. blog, tweet) are not counted as academic reading.
• Government-published (state, national or international) reports, curricular documents and teaching guides are not counted as academic reading (e.g. NSW K – 6 Syllabus; National Literacy Learning Progression).
PART B: Unit of work for the English programme
In Part B, you will present a unit of work based on your chosen text (‘Way Home’, ‘Shake a Leg’, or ‘Refugees’). This must be done using Program Builder.
1. If you do not have access to these picture books, watch the read aloud videos.
2. According to NESA, ‘A unit is a plan of the intended teaching learning for a particular class for a particular period of time’
3. Your unit must be a sequence of FIVE learning experiences (not lesson plan).
a. You can assign the text to be read at home or outside the unit of work – that means you can choose not to allocate any learning experience on the reading of the text in class.
b. You can include supplementary texts (e.g. video, news article…etc.).
4. Before you start, read the Sample Units provided on the NESA website
5. Read PETAA Paper 215 Let’s Write a Unit (on iLearn) before you start.
6. The unit is to be used in an English programme, the selection of Outcomes should be relevant to the NSW K – 10 English Syllabus;
7. The unit should be suitable for Stage 3 (Year 5) students, with adjustments for students of different capabilities in two learning experiences;
8. The unit should include teaching, learning and assessment activities;
9. Teacher resource from Reading Australia has been provided for your reference;
10. The unit should be written so that a grade colleague could teach from them without questions needing to be asked to clarify your intentions.
11. This section should be no more than 7-page long.
