Unit Overview
This unit is an introduction to empirical research methods commonly used in education research and related disciplines in the social sciences. The emphasis is on quantitative and qualitative research methodologies, but the intention is not to value the associated methods of research over other legitimate forms of research (e.g., historiography or philosophical research). Parallel to the presentation of different methods of research, we will examine the process of research. This is the process by which the researcher takes an idea and formulates this idea into a rigorous research study (or programme); this unit will examine the various steps in this process including the creation of specific research questions and justifying the need for the research.

Research is an activity. Research is participatory. Research occurs in a community. This unit is designed to actively engage students in this process from the start of the unit through the end of the unit. Aims, Outcomes and Objectives
Research in education is eclectic, conducted in many different settings by diverse groups of researchers for many different purposes and for many different audiences. From large- scale empirical studies, sometimes national or international in scope, to small-scale classroom- or school-based action research conducted by teachers, all educational research seeks to better understand learning and teaching and so enhance the work of educators.

On successful completion of the unit, you should be able to:
1. Effectively read scholarly literature, evaluate academic writing, and critically analyse published research articles (or reports, etc.).
2. Develop an emerging research question (or questions), that links to your research project.
3. Search library databases and identify literature that is relevant to your research topic and supports the need for your research question.
4. Critically analyse and synthesise arguments from literature that relates to a research questions/topics.
5. Identify some appropriate methodological approaches for different research purposes.
6. Identify some appropriate methods for data collection and analysis.
7. Improve your capacity to write in an academic genre
