Assignment Task

Context

Case studies depict real-life scenarios or problems that help people consider multiple ways of looking at a topic. They also provide opportunities to link theory with practice, because they bring theory alive with a real-world scenario.

This assessment requires you to work both individually and collaboratively to (a) analyse a case study in relation to the theories encountered in this unit, (b) develop an ‘improved’ case study and to (c) reflect on your learning through this task and in this unit of study.

Scenario

In a foundation classroom, the teacher schedules time in the day where the children are seated at shared tables of six to complete their lessons and other times when they can select playbased learning activities and work on the floor, or at smaller tables. These activities include materials such as construction sets, card games, drawing, and numeracy and literacy loose parts. The teacher takes this time to support some of the children who need additional learning support with the lesson.

Grace, Chi and Prianka are three friends who are effective learners but sometimes avoid some of the other children, especially during the play activities. Priyanka’s mother has informed the teacher that she is being bullied at this time by some of the other children. The teacher is surprised by this information and considers options for improving the situation.

1. Analysis of the scenario Write an introduction followed by collaborative reflections of the key issues in the scenario that you have discussed and analysed within the team

  • What concerns are presented in the scenario?
  • Consider the perspectives of the children, the teachers, and the families.
  • What are the factors that make this teaching and learning environment effective/not effective?

2. Consideration of a theoretical perspective

The point of this part of the assessment is to build and demonstrate your understandings of theories of teaching and learning. Each team member will choose a different theory from the seven outlined in the unit for this assessment. Each team member will outline how their chosen theory enables them to view the scenario, by providing examples and descriptions of how children would learn if this theory was used by the teacher. Each team member will therefore need to define and describe teaching strategies and practices that could support this learning.

For your chosen theory:

  • Write a brief summary of your chosen theory
  • Consider the benefits and limitations of the theory and how it explains what is happening in the scenario?
  • Apply your theory to the scenario and provide examples and descriptions of how children would learn if this theory underpinned the teacher’s practice.
  • Define and describe specific teaching strategies, how the classroom and learning materials might be designed and the teacher’s role as defined by your theory.

For example, “according to a poststructuralist paradigm or perspective children learn through …Teacher’s strategies within this perspective would include “The classroom could include particular learning activities, materials and may be designed in a way that supports aspects of the theory. The point of doing this is to share your ideas about each theory in a team and think collaboratively about the theory you would like to choose to write a new scenario.

3. Review and comparison

Together with your team, decide which of the theories you have shared with each other offers the most effective solution to the scenario. Explain why you made this choice with examples that support your choice. There is no right or wrong theory here. You are being assessed on your ability to understand the theoretical perspectives and to define why this is the best choice for your team using research and examples to support your choice.

  • Decide which of the seven theories encountered in this unit might offer the best lens through which to understand what is happening and improve the situation.
  • Explain your thinking for the choice of theory
