Assignment Task:

Begin by choosing ONE additional need to explore from one of the following categories:

  • Sensory impairments—sight, hearing, smell, touch, taste, spatial awareness.
  • Cognitive disabilities—developmental delays, intellectual disabilities, learning and behaviour disabilities.
  • Physical disabilities and health problems—any limitation on a person’s physical functioning, mobility, dexterity or stamina.
  • Individual styles and needs—gifted and talented students, cultural and language challenges.

Talk to your eLA if you have a specific additional need you want to report on but are not sure if it fits into one of these categories. It is less important which additional need you report on then how you report on it. You may choose to cover an additional need that you have some interest in from personal experience, but remember that you should only be citing academic sources in your report, not personal opinions.

The learning materials and readings in Weeks 5–8 provide an introduction to common types of additional needs, but for this assignment you are expected to conduct your own research and move well beyond this source material. You must demonstrate a thorough understanding of the additional need you have chosen and provide teaching strategies for how you would support the inclusion of a child with this additional need into an early childhood environment. Your report should also draw on the contemporary inclusion concepts, policies and practices outlined in Weeks 1–4.

As in Assignment 1, you will be required to conduct independent research and select evidence from peer-reviewed scholarly texts as well as authoritative non-peer-reviewed primary and secondary sources to support your views and strategies expressed in your report.

Your report should be presented in the following format:

  • Title page.

  • Introduction (150 words).

    • Briefly define the selected additional need and identify major characteristics, symptoms and challenges for children.

  • Discussion (approximately 600 words).

    • Briefly outline relevant policies and approaches that support the inclusion of children with this additional need.

    • Discuss what kinds of inclusive environments may ensure the best outcome for children with the additional need.

  • Recommendations for action, support and implementation (approximately 600 words).

    • Based on the information you have provided, describe and analyse what should be done to support and include children with this additional need. This should not just include actions taken to support the child but also collaborations with family, support professionals and practices based on the concepts of an inclusive learning environment.

  • Conclusion (150 words).
