Engage
Engage students and elicit prior knowledge.
Explore
Provide hands-on experience with the phenomenon.
Explain
Develop scientific explanations for observations and represent developing conceptual understanding. Consider current scientific explanations.
Elaborate
Extend understanding to a new context or make connections to additional concepts through a student-planned investigation.
Evaluate
Students re-represent their understanding and reflect on their learning journey, and teachers collect evidence about the achievement of outcomes.
This assignment requires you to use your knowledge of the 5E approach to produce a 5E learning plan. The learning plan will consist of five activities or experiences, designed around the 5E Model.
The plan should be for ONE year level of primary science, choosing one of the following sub-strands:
Foundation: Physical Sciences
Year 1: Physical Sciences
Year 2: Earth and Space
You may explore deeper planning considerations using prompts such as:
“I’m struggling to choose a focus concept that fits the chosen sub-strand and allows for rich development across all five Es. Can we brainstorm criteria for selection?”
“What should I consider when justifying my resource choices, especially in terms of safety, age appropriateness, and accessibility for young learners?”
Prepare your assignment as a Word document, which must include:
Learning Plan using the provided template, including:
At least one content descriptor for the Science Understanding strand selected.
At least one content descriptor from the Science as a Human Endeavor Skills strand.
At least one content descriptor from the Science Inquiry Skills strand.
Introduction/Rationale
Explain the scientific skills and concepts covered within your plan.
Reference the content descriptions and other curriculum documents (e.g., Structure, Rationale, and Aims).
Explain how STEM will feature in your learning plan. (250 words)
Learning Plan of Five Activities/Experiences
Designed around the 5E learning Model.
Identify any resources used. (100 words per stage)
Justification of Choices
Explain your rationale for each activity/experience. (100 words per stage)
Reference List
Cite all sources used for all components according to APA 7th edition conventions.
Start the reference list on a new page.
Do not use bullet or numbered points; ensure it is alphabetically ordered.
Unit Learning Outcomes Supported:
Outcome 2
Outcome 3
Outcome 4
This assessment requires students to create a 5E learning plan for one year level of primary science. The learning plan is designed around the 5E instructional model: Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate and includes five activities or experiences.
Foundation: Physical Sciences
Year 1: Physical Sciences
Year 2: Earth and Space
Include at least one content descriptor from each of the following strands:
Science Understanding
Science as a Human Endeavour Skills
Science Inquiry Skills
Provide an Introduction/Rationale explaining the scientific skills and concepts, curriculum references, and integration of STEM (250 words).
Design five activities/experiences aligned with the 5E model. Include resources used (100 words per stage).
Provide a justification for each activity , explaining the rationale (100 words per stage).
Include a reference list in APA 7th edition, starting on a new page, alphabetically ordered, and without bullets or numbers.
Outcome 2: Applying scientific concepts and inquiry skills
Outcome 3: Communicating scientific explanations and reasoning
Outcome 4: Integrating STEM in primary science learning
The Academic mentor guided the student step by step to ensure a clear, structured, and compliant submission:
The mentor reviewed the 5E model and the specific unit outcomes.
Clarified expectations for integrating Science Understanding, Science as a Human Endeavour, and Science Inquiry Skills.
Discussed the importance of curriculum alignment, STEM integration, and age-appropriate learning experiences.
The mentor helped the student choose a suitable year level and sub-strand based on the student’s familiarity and confidence.
Prompts were provided to refine the focus concept and ensure rich development across all five Es.
The student used the provided template to outline activities under each 5E stage.
The mentor encouraged linking hands-on experiences with conceptual understanding and curriculum content descriptors.
Guidance was given on selecting appropriate resources, considering safety, accessibility, and relevance.
The mentor guided the student to explain scientific skills, curriculum references, and STEM integration clearly in 250 words.
Feedback focused on ensuring alignment with curriculum descriptors and articulating the learning objectives.
Each 5E stage was detailed with activities, resources, and expected outcomes.
Justifications were written to explain why each activity was selected and how it supports student learning, conceptual understanding, and inquiry skills.
Mentor ensured all sources were cited in APA 7th edition style.
The reference list was alphabetically ordered and started on a new page, meeting all assessment requirements.
A complete 5E learning plan for the chosen year level and sub-strand.
Activities effectively linked to Science Understanding, Science as a Human Endeavour, and Science Inquiry Skills.
Clear explanations in the introduction/rationale highlighting STEM integration.
Each 5E stage included descriptive activities, identified resources, and justifications.
Fully formatted APA 7th reference list.
Application of the 5E instructional model in planning science learning experiences.
Integration of curriculum content descriptors in Science Understanding, Human Endeavour, and Inquiry Skills strands.
