This assignment task requires you to respond to a fictional case study in which you will examine and defend children’s rights towards their health and development within a human rights and equity framework.

Case study 1
While the teacher is reading a book about bodies to the Prep class, Annie pulls her shirt up and says, 'I’ve got nipples and a vagina.' The teacher responds, 'Yes, girls have nipples, a vulva, a vagina and a bottom.' The teacher continues with the book and reads that boys also have nipples, but their private parts are a bottom, a penis and testicles.

For this case study:
1. Examine the competing rights in this scenario (the parent's rights, the child's rights, and the teacher's rights).
2. Discuss teacher advocacy and children's voice in relation to these rights.
3. Consider and differentiate between the notions of sex and gender and their 'place' in learning environments.
4. Devise a plan that will repair the relationship and support the rights of the child, teacher and parent in moving forward.

Case study 2
In a Year 6 classroom, 11-year-old Sam asks his teacher, 'How do you know if you are gay?' There was a story about a gay couple on the TV last night and Sam asks if it’s okay to think about kissing your best friend. He looks the teacher directly in the eyes and says, 'Like really kissing him'. Sam’s best friend is in the same class at school and they both get along well and enjoy swimming squad together. Sam's parents are older, and Sam is an only child. The family live on a small dairy farm on the outskirts of town. The classroom teacher and Sam's parents have a good working relationship.

Reflect on Sam’s question and consider how the teacher should respond.
