Assignment Task

Introduction

As a soccer coach, I strive to teach the game to my players, I know that teaching the game require a teaching approaches & methods that must help my players develop their way of playing without taking away their autonomy and adaptiveness. The teaching-learning-training model I apply should improve my youth players skills and abilities. I design my learning activities along the player development process should be intentional. To be intentional coach I must apply 10 principles

Behavioral Theory

The development of athletes should occur in different degrees in four main components tactical, technical, physical, and psychological aspects of performance. Amongst them, tactical behavior is essential to team performance such actions in the play are associated with perception, decision-making, and anticipation because they are considered key elements to determine what to do in the play (Greco, 2006).

As a soccer coach applying the analytical coaching method, I always encourage the players to construct knowledge by adjusting their understanding of the game through conditioned games to create new habits. Although Skinners' theory of operant conditioning involves the correct response to a situation or task being rewarded where this reinforcement is shaped by me as a coach, in my last conditioned game I reward the players if they complete 5 consecutive passes before scoring a goal by counting the goal 5 goals whereas if they score directly without completing 5 passes the goal will not be counted the output is to maintain tactical ball possession before scoring a goal.

Social Cognitive Theory

A clear framework based on learning theories is important in the coaching of team sports. Players adjust the way they play by learning new skills and tactics and integrating the corresponding actions into their tactical behavior. A player executing a pass will therefore have a corresponding intention that is based on many possible notions of play, depending on the scope of stimuli that are considered. In brief, intentions direct decision-making especially in tactical behavior over the learning process and it refers to specific “contents of the game” that are assimilated as players develop their understanding of the game. The process of learning through observation and imitation is known as social cognitive theory. This theory refers to a psychological Albert Bandura and it focuses on how mental (cognitive) factors are involved in learning. As a soccer coach I follow the 4 stages of Bandura theory in my teaching session as the following:

1. Attentional stage: As a coach, I demonstrate the passing techniques, how to balance the body, how to improve our awareness before passing and finally what part of the foot, we use to pass in this way the players can imitate the new skill.

2. Retention stage: by using a simple passing drill the players start creating a mental picture of passing techniques visually and verbally. So, once the players observe my modelled behavior, they can store a visual sequence of the action, perhaps remind themselves verbally of key elements of the action, and then mentally rehearse (visualize) the action.

3. Motor production stage: now by adding a specific soccer physical drill which is speed, agility & quickness I can refine the passing skills and make the drill more realistic according to a real soccer game.

4. Motivational stage: this process is the most important stage to me as a coach, players must be motivated extrinsically to arrange and cognitively remember the information in the retention process and further motivated in the motor reproduction process to practice the observed behavior to improve their performance which motivates them intrinsically when they noticed the improvement during the game.

Conclusion

Soccer coaches must be aware be to positive role model by taking a social cognitive approach to coaching, coaches can help their athletes through the processes of observation, imitation and reinforcement of acceptable social behaviours, learning behaviours, motor behaviours and champion behaviours. However, it can also be exciting that a coach can teach, influence and inspire athletes by having them observe his or her behaviour. Coaches have the potential to make a difference in the lives of their athletes daily, and by embracing the ideas and applying the concepts associated with the social cognitive theory, coaches will be well on the way to improving the athletic experience for all athletes, on and off the field.
