Highlights
Introduction:
This group work project aims to design two major activities which fit in the approach of content-based and learner-centred curricula. The activity contains the single grammar point of punctuation which is very important in learning the English language.
1. Activity 1
As per the content-based curricula in English language teaching, a topical approach to curricula have been used (Christison& Murray, 2014). According to this approach, content is selected and then explained in the learning session at the same time. This kind of approach is useful in higher stages of learning. Since the learner group is adult migrant learners who are not quite well versed with the English language, topical approach to content-based curricula is used to help the learners to learn punctuation in the English language which is the very essence of English language. With regard to the adult migrant learners, the learners belong to countries like France, Spain, Italy, India and China.
1.1 Description of the activity
The name of the activity will be ‘The Power of Punctuation’ which will be a 10-15 minute activity exhibiting topical approach. The activity will be in the form of a learning session wherein the topics are identified, objectives are set out for each topic, issues for learning established, the programme of work for each student and assessment of each student (Cenoz, 2015). The activity of Power of Punctuation will take place frequently for about 5 times a week for a 10-15 minute session. For 4 days, a single topic will be covered relating to punctuation and on the fifth day, the feedback and evaluation are done to provide the actual progress of the learners.
Below are the steps involved in the activity-
• Identification of topic- Commas, quotation marks, apostrophes, colons, semicolons, end punctuation
• Setting out the objectives of each topic
• Establishment of learning issues (For instance, use of a comma, inverted comma and double inverted comma can be problematic for learners)
• Assessment of each student
1.2 Suitability of the activity
The Power of Punctuation activity fits within the curriculum approach because it provides a methodological approach of obtaining core skills and knowledge over a wide range of subjects. It will be well received by the learners because the worksheets and cheatsheets so that they are able to provide a guide to the learners to make use of correct punctuation in English language (Schleppegrell, 2016). It specifically helps in writing the English language which is the major issue in this language for the adult migrant learners. Thus, this activity which is in the form of short learning session actually fits in the content-based curricula of teaching the basics of the punctuation in English which revolves around the content of different topics of punctuation.
1.3 Difference in the activities
This activity is different from the activities in Assessment 1 as it provides more detailed insight regarding the single grammar point of punctuation in the English language(Spada, 2016). The activities in the Assessment 1 were based on the linguistic curricula which extremely focus on vocational approach and academic languages functions approach. This present activity is more extensive in relation to content as compared to the previous ones because will really help the learners to learn the basics of punctuation in the English language by covering different topics of punctuation.
2. Activity 2
The second activity is based on learner-based curricula. Learner-based curricula are chosen since the learners are involved in the decision making with regard to the content of the curricula and how it is to be taught (Starkey, 2019). In this curriculum, the humanistic approach is used which is a new and radical approach to learning the English language. The humanistic approach includes the method of touching on the capacity and ability that all learners are presumed to possess as well as the different methods of concentration.
2.1 Description of the activity
The name of the activity will be ‘Gamify” wherein the learners will be indulged in some fun ways of learning punctuation marks. The target learner will be the adult migrant learners who do not know English really well and belong to different countries.
