Assignment Task:

Learning Outcomes
By completing this task, students should demonstrate that they are able to:

  •  locate relevant and appropriate research literature
  •  clearly and concisely critique academic research
  •  examine the intended and unintended consequences of assessment practices for students, teachers and schools
  •  critically examine the messages that formal and informal assessment practices communicate to students, parents and others about what and who is valued in an educational setting
  •  apply accepted referencing conventions

Literature reviews are a traditional component of all research-informed projects. As a researcher, it is your responsibility to identify, examine and evaluate what is already known about your topic, how experts in the field describe the issues you are interested in; and the key concepts, terms and definitions used in the literature.

Step 1: Choose one of the topics below:
High-stakes testing – what can national data tell us?
NAPLAN – what are some of the issues surrounding performativity?
NAPLAN and MySchool – what are some of the concerns with validity and use of the data?

Step 2: Find at least three articles that relate to your chosen topic and answer the following questions (including one article from the text-book National Testing in Schools):

  • WHAT is known about assessment in the Australian context?
  • WHY is it important; and,
  • WHAT implications does this new understanding have on assessment policies, pedagogy and equity?

Your literature review should:

  • Identify key literature in the field (the most significant academic and professional texts);
  • Identify key terms, concepts and definitions, highlighting conflicting positions in the literature;
  • Identify the most significant problems evident in the literature;
  • Identify what needs to be improved or changed;
  • Critically evaluate the problems, theories, themes, evidence, arguments, dilemmas and controversies raised in the literature.

Format: Although your literature review will be smaller in scale and scope, it should mimic the style and process of a more substantial formal literature review, such as would be prepared for publication in a thesis or journal, for a particular educational audience or organisation. See the SAMPLE LITERATURE REVIEW on Blackboard. Please use the following guidelines:

  • Ensure that your writing is clear and concise
  • Include a title that reflects the content and focus of the review
  • Include an introduction that sets the context and establishes the boundaries of the review i.e., what has been included (and why) and what has been excluded
  • Include sub-headings that identify the content and focus of different sections
  • Clearly state your findings from the literature and how they relate to your chosen educational phase/learning area
  • Include a full reference list in APA style (not included in word count).

Presentation Guidelines

  • Use a plain font such as Calibri, Cambria, Arial, Times New Roman or similar
  • Use size 12-14 font for headings, and size 12 font for the main body
  • Include 2.5 cm margins on all sides, and
  • Use 2 line spacing
