Introduction

This unit focuses on how our lives are being reshaped by the permeating presence of digital technologies. The ‘digitalisation’ of our world and the evolving promise of ‘anything, any time and everywhere’, has implications for education also. This unit will provide students with the opportunity to explore how digital technologies are changing the way we live, relate to each other and how we learn. Students will be introduced to a broad range of topics and perspectives. The unit looks at the opportunities and consequences of teaching and learning in the digital world. It is designed to help students navigate through the ‘technological maze’ and how to harness their potential for learning and teaching in present and future real, virtual and augmented education spaces. 

Detailed information on Assessment

In this assessment task, you will explore a particular technology's role in education by creating an infographic. Using Canva to create your poster is recommended, but you may choose any tool you wish. Your poster and reflection should be no longer than three A4 pages in length and should consist of the following:

• An infographic 
  • infographic reference list 
• A 250-word reflection
  • reflection reference list

Where appropriate, you should use in-text and end-text referencing for the text and images in your infographic and the text in your reflection.

Part A

Create an Infographic Choose a web-based tool, app, software or digital device that could be useful in an educational setting and create an infographic that reviews its features and relates them to the Australian curriculum's continuum of information communication technology capabilities.

You can

Choose an app or software that runs on these devices, You can pick a piece of technology with a designated educational function, like Lego Robotics or Beebots, if you are interested in physical technologies instead of purely software-based tools.

Your infographic should be visually appealing and be created using a balance of both images and text. Specifically, your infographic MUST cover the following aspects:

1. Define and describe the use of the tool, software or device

2. Describe how it may be used effectively in an educational setting, linking it to the Australian Curriculum

3. Indicate the pros and cons of using it in an educational setting

4. A short review about what areas of the Digital Literacy general capabilities the tool/device supports for students - ideally, you will link it to specific sub-elements and levels of the Digital Literacy capabilities framework. 

Reflection

Reflect succinctly in  words on your learning experience as you created your infographic and discuss connections between this assessment task and the course content and weekly readings. Keep your writing short and concise. You only have a limited word count.

Specifically, your reflection should cover the following:

• Reflect on what you have learned through undertaking this task and why you chose the tool you did.
• What have you discovered about using technology in schools and how it might affect your future career
• Discuss connections between the assessment task and relevant literature from either the course content and weekly readings or others you have found
• What worked well, what did you struggle with, and how did you overcome those problems
• Try to link your comments to the AITSL (APST) listed below; how have you demonstrated them through this assessment?

Website

For this assessment, you will create a web-based online lesson set up similarly to a page in a Learning Management System like Blackboard (i.e. a topic page found in this unit). The online lesson you create must focus on teaching your class about the safe, responsible, and ethical use of ICT within the challenges and opportunities of the online world.  Your content should be aimed at and age group of your choice, i.e. Early years,  Primary or Secondary students. You must tell us the target audience in your reflection. You can choose to cover either:

1. Cyberbullying via social media - in detail, this is a narrow scope of research but will require more depth.

2. Safe, Ethical and responsible use of social media - This is broader and allows you to look at use of social media more widely.

Reflection

Write a word reflection on how you have accessed professional development resources to assist you in utilising the tools you have deployed in your website and how your engagement with your peers, tutors and others has helped to shape the final website design and content. Then, identify areas that this assessment has helped you identify a need for future professional development as you progress through your course and into work. Specifically, your reflection should cover:

• Website creation process, what worked and what did not
• Curation and resources - why you chose them and how you displayed them.
• Access to and application of professional learning
• Website learning design - Why did you organise your website and activities in the way you did.
• What you would do differently if you had to do the task again
• The above should be supported with links to relevant literature.
