Introduction

Welcome to EDUC5017 MTPS504, Creative Technologies. As the name suggests this unit is focussed on the use of technology in teaching and learning making clear connections to the Australian Curriculum. The term Creative Technologies is purposeful, and it suggests a more active, hands-on, creative approach to the use of technology to enhance learning. We have steadily seen an increase in the amount of technologies being used by teachers in the preparation of materials and in teaching in recent years. The modern classroom is full of technology such as interactive whiteboards, laptops, iPads and more. This unit is focussed on the next stage of technology evolution in learning. The unit has been designed around three modules. Initially the focus is on teaching and learning with a particular focus on using the online environment. Secondly the attention turns to the learners themselves, how technology can be used from early years through to secondary and how it can meet the needs of all learners. Finally, the focus turns to teachers and their professional learning requirements. The preservice qualification is only the beginning of the journey and this module will look at how and why teachers should continue to engage in professional learning and how technology can help when they are time poor and busy with teaching. This unit does not require you to be digitally fluent, but it does require you to be engaged and willing to try new things. It has been designed to be theoretical yet also practical, with the emphasis on technologies or skills you can take away with you to use in your teaching

Unit Learning Outcomes

All graduates of Curtin University achieve a set of six Graduate Capabilities during their course of study. These inform an employer that, through your studies, you have acquired discipline knowledge and a range of other skills and capabilities which employers would value in a professional setting. Each unit in your course addresses the Graduate Capabilities through a clearly identified set of learning outcomes. They form a vital part in the process referred to as assurance of learning. The learning outcomes notify you of what you are expected to know, understand or be able to do in order to be successful in this unit. Each assessment for this unit is carefully designed to test your knowledge of one or more of the unit learning outcomes. On successfully completing all of the assessments you will have achieved all of these learning outcomes. Your course has been designed so that on graduating you will have achieved all of Curtin's Graduate Capabilities through the assurance of learning processes in each unit. On successful completion of this unit students can: Graduate Capabilities addressed

1 Research and explain the relevant issues and the strategies available to support the safe, responsible and ethical use of creative technologies in learning environments
