Rationale

The ability to articulate beliefs about learning and its relationship to development is important for you as an early childhood educator as you justify and communicate decisions about teaching and learning to families, children and the wider education community. This assignment is designed to provide the opportunity for you to develop your philosophy about the relationship between play, learning and development and consider the implications of these ideas for teaching.

Option 1 - Write a discussion paper on the current state of Play in the Australian Education System, demonstrating your learning in the topic. Consider: What does play currently look like across birth-8 settings? What does current research tell us? What do you believe to be important considerations in incorporating play across the birth-8 curriculum? How can Early Childhood educators advocate for play with children aged birth-8?

Option 2 - Write a discussion paper related to a question you have raised about the relationship between learning, development and teaching in the early years. The question may be based on your reflections over the semester. Your question should be negotiated with your tutor via email prior to submission. 

For both options, you should consider:

• Demonstrating your understanding of learning theory studied in the topic and a sound knowledge of early childhood play pedagogy.
• Using current research, articles and credible sources to support your analysis. Referring to Australian Framework, Curriculum and Policy documents. Referring to literature that goes beyond the topic literature and demonstrating a breadth of reading in this area.
• Including examples relating to children aged birth-8, demonstrating your understanding of the connection between theory and practice
