Main objectives of the assessment:

In this assignment the group of two to three students will identify his/her research topic from one of the research challenges in Advanced 5G Network Infrastructure for the Future Internet (see appendix 1) and develop a research proposal of no less than 8 pages long:

Brief Description of the assessment:

The student will first conceive their research through the formulation of a research scope indicating the problem to be investigated, the methodology to be employed and the anticipated outcomes and then formulate an approach by conducting a literature review to determine what approaches have been adopted by researchers in the past and what approach could be adopted in his/her own work that is novel. The student will collect and collate past research projects and then categorise this into coherent Literature Review with acknowledgement of sources. The literary review should consist of not only research into the proposal theme but also the technological options available. 

A series of top-level objectives will be derived from the scope of the project and from these top-level objects a more detailed list of objectives will be identified. A work-package and task list will then be derived from the objectives and a narrative will be developed for work that will be conducted in each. A time plan will be developed for these work-packages and tasks using Gantt Charts and a Sequence Plan through Pert Charts. Critical paths Identifying what type of resources you will need should then be identified.

  • Evolution of networks towards OTT like platforms integrating connectivity, storage and computing resources opening for new service models to telecom/ISP providers
  • Network scalability towards a high number of resource-constrained devices, a multiplicity of service requirements, and new connectivity paradigms (user controlled)
  • Dynamic scalability of network capabilities through availability of managed and enhanced resources
  • Network energy consumption reduction, a factor of at least 10 is targeted 

 

Strand 2. 

Characterisation and availability of secure and trusted environments for software-based virtualised networks, enabling trusted multi-tenancy 

Strand 3. 

  • Improvements of radio spectrum usage, novel strategies for coverage/service extension, support of novel use cases and mobile edge cloud applications, the usability of today unexplored spectrum
  • Dynamic scalability of network capabilities through the availability of managed and enhanced resources
  • Network energy consumption reduction, a factor of at least 10 is targeted.
